FAR – Best examples of SIMs

Not asking what’s on the test, but where can I find the best examples of how questions are asked, what type of format are they asking? ie. multiple-step cals, JEs, etc. I have Becker and Wiley test bank. Wondering if one better reflect the actual exam than the other and knowing exam could be completely different. I didn’t practice any sims for other sections but not sure that’s going to fly for FAR.

    Thanks

The AICPA has a practice exam on their website that is representative of the actual exam.

I would not waste a lot of time on FAR SIMS. IMHO, I would spend a vast majority of your time on the MCQ's.

    The exceptions being:

Those cover the major “Oh dear Lord” SIMS that you really hate to see on the CPA exam. I'm not saying that these were on my exam, just these were the SIMS I covered out of fear that I would get them on the exam.

I didn't do sims for the other sections, but since it's 40% for FAR I was wondering if it's worth spending time on. Edit meaning spending a lot of time practicing sims as opposed to practicing actual sims = trying to avoid “why wouldn't you practice since it's 40%”. Point being if time is better spent on mcqs and those will carry you through sims provided you're proficient in the material.

I have found that even the practice AICPA sims that they have on their website sometimes are not the greatest either. Like a previous poster said study those SIMS that are a beast to do. Other then that i would just go through the book and memorize and recreate journal entries.

    FAR - 88 (Jul 2012)
    AUD - 85 (Oct 2012)
    BEC - 82 (Nov 2012)
    REG - 92 (Jan 2013) DONE!

    Using Becker Self Study 2012

Thanks for the input 🙂 Is the authorative lit helpful on FAR? For me it was helpful on both REG and AUD.

I found it to be fairly helpful.

Editing to add, the above list of SIMS is not exam disclosure. Those were on my short list of SIMS which I studied as a firebreak. I studied them as a worst case insurance policy as I figured I had a good grip on the other SIM topics and when I asked myself “what are the worst SIMS I could possibly get?” these were the answer.

For those who might do these items every day, you might want to skip them or substitue other SIMS on topics where you are weak.

I planned for the worst case and hoped for the best! 😀

For what it's worth my SIMS were not on any of the major topics – and there was barely anything on my exam on Gov/NFP. A couple were basic accounting 200 topics that you should just know by now. (and all journal entries) The other topics were all covered in less than a page in Beckers. There's just no way to tell. All you can do is to study everything as best you can and hope you get a topic you remember. I'm sure if I took FAR again next week I'd just as likely fail as pass. I think it's all a crap shoot. Good luck!

Thank you 🙂 Just to be clear as well, the point is only to get advice on how best to prepare for sims. I just feel a bit overwhelmed between all the questions in becker and wiley and that's without any sims.

We all need to be very careful with potential exam disclosures. A statement may not seem to us as an exam disclosure, and it may not be intended as exam disclosure, but the AICPA may not see things the same way. In a nutshell, if a topic is on the CSO's, it is fair game on the exam.
