Kesecker87MemberIt's nice if your spouses are very supportive- but after 6 months of studying and getting weaker on all parts except for two- it makes me wonder if this is really for me- My Husband told me in no uncertain terms that I should stop- since I don't really need it, and hey, he is tired of watching the baby for half the year with no results- and he wonders how much longer it would take for me to pass. He never really wanted me to do it, but felt that this is something I had to get out of my system. I really appreciate what he has done and feel that your family comes first- if they need you, you shouldn't be selfish ( in my case it is selfish since I have well paying job and don't think much will come out of this CPA).

AnonymousInactiveStudying for the CPA exam requires a different type of approach. This is not your everyday college exam. You need to train your brain to absorb TONS and TONS of material. Remember, you're being tested on almost everything your learned in your Accounting and Business courses in college. The brain is capable of absorbing all of this, but it takes time, patience and lots of repetition.

mla1169ParticipantI'm sorry your spouse is not supportive. I'll reserve my opinion of his attitude but it doesnt sound like you are the one being selfish.
You say you're resigned to quitting but you keep coming back to this thread. Are you looking for the motivation to continue or permission from your peers to give up?

Mom2twoMemberThank you mla1169 for saying this! I was reading this thread today and kept thinking about it. It's bugging me!! To me it seems like Kesecker87 is looking for permission from peers to quit. If you , Kesecker87, really are ok with your decision to quit, you would have never posted this thread. Sorry this sounds harsh, it's supposed to. As for the non-supportive spouse, I will keep my opinion to myself. But I can say this, no is gong to stand in the way of me becoming a CPA. And yes I have a two children, one is a toddler and I started this process when she was an infant! No matter what excuses you use to justify your decision to quit, as long as you stay in any sort of accounting field (industry, public), your CPA will pay you back and you will command a higher salary. Period. It will be needed. This will eat at you for years if you quit. The could I have done it question. Do it now, while your child is still young and before you have more children. You can do this if you want it. But if you don't, then yes you should quit. But just know that you will always wonder what if.

mdrobbinMember@ Mia … That's inspiring stuff that you pulled it off with all that on your plate (kids, two jobs and school). Thanks for sharing that… whenever I find myself feeling sorry for myself when I'm at the end of a 14 hour day of work/studying, your type of situation puts me in check. All I have is a full time job and that alone makes me feel stressed out on top of studying for the CPA. I truly have a lot of respect for all of you that have family commitments on TOP of a job and still are plugging through the CPA.
Thanks again for sharing, great stuff!!!

Took me 3x to get past FAR. It took me a bit to get over me psyching myself out, attitude is a big part of this process. Another thing is to do massive amounts of mcq's…I love Bob Korz's comment,” Do MCQ's until you puke. Then clean up the puke. Then do more MCQ's.” He is so right on!!!
In my house the CPA was a four letter word. For me, it was a tough 17months. We fought like crazy. It made the process really more difficult than necessary. The pressure of knowing I had to hurry up and finish or WW3 would start was no fun. I don't envy anyone going down that path. I hope you can work out a happy medium with your hubby, having that support is invaluable. I do think you should figure out whether or not this is something you want to do, it is really an investment of time, emotions, and endurance. Good luck to you.

MinimortyParticipantOnly study before your kids wake up or after they go down to sleep. I had two kids under 3 (my youngest was born 3 weeks before I took FAR – my first exam). I refused to study if either child was awake. Anyway, perhaps something similar would benefit you.
Also, don't take your current job for granted. A couple years of mismanagement could put your firm out of business. Having a CPA license opens a lot of doors.
Not everyone is cut out for it though. It's ok if you are not.

MinimortyParticipantAnd I'll say what the others won't: your spouse is acting like a d-bag for not supporting you. Tell him to grow the F up and act like an adult.

AnonymousInactive@Kesecker87…if you want to quit, better quit now before you pass any sections. Otherwise, there will be a waste to give up the credit you have earned. I think many people put much prize on passing the tests and fufilled their goals as a CPA. That is great, but that doesn't mean not becoming a CPA is a failure. Everyone has their own reasons and motives to become a CPA here, and if the effort you have put, in your opinion, in not justify to the outcome, then maybe it's not worthy it. In my case, I have a stable job, but I am constantly worried about loosing my job and not able to support my family and myself. As I an adult, I have always had a second job or side job to make me feel secured. Sometimes I was awake at night and thinking “what if?” Becoming a CPA gives me a great option that also make me feel secured about my future, in additional to other great things come with the title, which is my primary reason I got into this CPA thing. If you think the reason you got into this is not worthy the sacrafice you are going to make, then probably quiting is an option or you might want to put it off for the right timing, say until your children grew up a bit…my two cents is whatever decision you made today, picture yourself years from now, and ask yourself would you regret the decision you make today?

Kesecker87MemberYes, to answer all of your questions, I keep coming back because apart of me doesn't want to quit- yet I'm not sure what to do. On the one hand is my family- and I can figure out a schedule that works well for everyoneo- so that might not be the biggest issue. But the other part that keeps nagging my mind is HOW can somone like me who studied for SO long and knew Yaeger inside out – I did MCQ's till I “puked” I did everything that I thought was going to get me to pass- but did so misreably instead. Tell me, what strategy should I use this time that will make a difference. Rember, I knew the info like the back of my hand- that is how much i studied- maybe I just studied to much and that was the problem…. I don't know-
