AnonymousInactiveI failed FAR four times and my first score was a 52. Believe me, I was demoralized and gave up after my 4th failed attempt, but got back on the horse three months later because I knew deep down inside that I made the wrong choice by giving up. I'm glad I came back to my senses because I finally completed the journey. You can do this….ANYONE can do this… It all boils down to how determined you are and how badly you want that CPA license. If being a CPA is your dream, then giving up is a big mistake. A 61 doesn't mean you're stupid. It just means you need to study more….A LOT more…. Have confidence in yourself. These are passable tests.
Best of luck!

Kesecker87MemberThanks for all the support, but I'm really giving up. I studied for 6 months for this exam- it's not like I studied a month or two- I must of logged in 600 hours for this test. I used every tool- Yaeger CRAM, Wiley- I scored well with the MCQ's in the book. When I got my results from the FAR exam – I was weak in every area except fundamentals and government accounting. I'm just going to write off this as a great learning opportunity and be done with it. Anyway, what will a CPA do for my life? I just wanted to have this extra credential to stay ahead of the recent twenty-somthing's that get their CPA's straight out of college. However, it is especially hard for me, because I have a small child at home and a very demanding job. I don't think I will make any more than I do with a CPA. and here ist the funny part, I graduated with a 4.0 masters- I study hard and get A's. But when it comes to standardized tests, I always get nailed – it is very unfair. I will try to get a CFE though, heard that was easy. Good luck to all of you who are trying- I really give you credit for not giving up and maybe one day I'll come back and try again..

AnonymousInactiveWhen I started studying for a new section, I took practice tests and would bomb them. I would take the practice tests in study mode (which says the answer and explains it) I would learn slowly, and after 20-25 times, I was pulling mid to high 80's, and I knew I was ready to take the real exam.
Do MCQ's until you puke. Then clean up the puke. Then do more MCQ's.

https://www.thedontquitpoem.com/thePoem.htm
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow–
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out–
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit–
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

jkey57MemberYes, a 61 is a horrible score and you should definitely give up. No point in wasting any more of your time.
My, my, it sure is a beautiful spring day today. A perfect day to throw away those review books and take a nice walk in the park, maybe get some ice cream….
And imagine all the free time you'll have now that your evenings are free! You won't have to study anymore, so you can spend your nights with all your family, friends, and loved ones. You'll even have time to go to the gym and lose that pesky 10 pounds you've put on in the last year. Who knows, you may even have time to ask out that special “someone” on a date.
Do it. Forget about the whole idea. You'll feel so much better.
There's nothing wrong with moving on…

mla1169ParticipantKesecker87, sounds like you really didn't want this anyway, and in that case it is better to walk away.
If you actually wanted this nothing would keep you from it, not a child OR a demanding job. Take it from someone who did this with 2 kids, one full time job, one part time job (yes I cashiered at Kohls at night) and I was in school for my masters degree at the same time. But the difference between you and I is that I actually wanted this more than anything.
As for what a CPA can do for your life, well I am 42 years old and have been working in industry for over 20 years, but tomorrow I start a management position at a 50% salary increase over my previous position. This position gives me management experience so if I want to look again when the job market improves I am certain I can nearly double my current salary.
Good luck in your quest for an easy designation. I do hope you find what you're looking for.

AnonymousInactiveYou are not alone for such feeling. I put 4 months of study time for FAR and end up with 68. The report shows me i was stronger in all sections but weaker on SIMS. I was so sad when i saw that result and so shy even to look at my husband 'cause he was the only one to take care of our two kids sothat i can study. I'm full time employee, mom, and study for CPA. Though I failed it, i learnt that I was slow in doing SIMS (left blank 2 SIMS on exam) and decided to get back to hard study for 5 weeks and kick it out of my way. when i read peopls' advise from this site, it motivates me more to get back to the track. So please donot afraid it!!! you can do it!

LisafutureCPAMemberIf this is something that you want to do, DO NOT give up. I have seen a lot of encouraging stories of persistance here in this website, that is the key. In my believe, there is an 80% of CPA candidates that are working full time, I was one of those and had to go through a lot. Also I'm married so it is hard, pressure was on coming from every direction but you can't give up. Keep trying, you'll not regret it!!!

PeanutParticipant@Kesecker87, I very much relate. My first exam ever, BEC in 2010, I studied two months. I got a 58! I was thinking “what the hell went wrong? I studied SO hard!” Once you get the hang of studying, and your specific needs in understanding the material, you will realize what you need to do to pass. I felt the same way as you after that first exam. I was 100% sure I was going to give it up, and that it wasn't worth it. This site saved me, seeing other people going through the same thing as me is what really helped. I think I have played my cards right since then. My emotions after that first horrific score was sad/embarrassed, then, I became angry, and wanted to go back for these exams with a vengeance! I actually didn't take BEC again until 2012, I couldn't bare to look at it again lol. Maybe it wasn't the brightest idea, but I really just could not look at that material right away. Please keep your head in the game!

timcpaMembercpamom,
I had the same problem with SIMS on REG, which was the second test i took. I completely left two SIMS blank and made a 66. afterwards, what helped me was allocating 40% of my exam time to SIMS and 60% divided almost equally to the MC testlets. It ensured i wasn't spending more time than i should on a MC testlet .
Second time on REG i made comparable on sims but scored 72, third time above comparable and passed.
BEC and FAR i made comparable on SIMS and passed first time. I was able to spend enough time and thought on the SIMS, and tried to fill in as much as i could.
