Expiration of scores – Work experience & 150 credit hours

    Hey everyone,

I have a few months of work experience, and was laid off before the official start of 1 year of work experience required by the state accounting board. I have a few MSA classes under my belt, but not the 30 required for completion of this school’s MSA program. I think that the CPA exam is the most difficult part of Florida CPA licensure, so I’m knocking it out before fulfilling the work experience and 150 credit hour requirements.

I intend to take FAR and possibly AUD early January. I know that passing either would begin the 18 month window. Again I live in Florida. My question: If I don’t get 1 year of work experience or don’t hit the 150 hour rule, what are the consequences?

    Thanks for any advice.

Are you trying to get this done before some type of rule change? I could be wrong BUT I'm pretty sure that as long as you SIT for a CPA exam before the deadline you will be grandfathered in under the old rules.

Might want to call your state board and find out if that's the case.

If you pass the exams and don't meet the work and/or 150 hour credit you just don't get your license until you do. Unless your state has an expiration date on the time between passing and meeting all the requirements.

According to the Florida Division of Certified Public Accounting “Applicants must apply for licensure within three years of receiving notification from NASBA of passing the last part of the CPA exam. If an applicant does not apply for licensure within this three year period, CPA examination grades expire and the applicant must reapply and retake the CPA examination. Furthermore, applicants will be required to meet the education requirements in effect at the time of the new application.” https://www.myfloridalicense.com/dbpr/cpa/licensure.html

    Thanks starlight and dtomasello.

Starlight, I read that. The wording is sort of ambiguous. Applicants must apply for licensure within three years of receiving notification from NASBA of passing the last part of the CPA exam.

It says “must apply.” It doesn't mention that application must be approved. So, would application without completion of every requirement extend the 3 year windows?

I doubt after passing the last part of the exam I would need 3 years to fulfill the education and work experience requirements, but it is nice to know.
