I just moved to Oregon for a job from Washington. I’m hoping in 1 year I can move back to Washington, back to all my family and such. I plan to take my exams in Washington since I’m already approved and I can visit family everytime I go back. Once I pass my exams I will want to get licensed right after I have enough experience. I’m just trying to figure the best route. Take exams in Washington, and have my firm fill out a Washington CPA experience form… Since I will plan on practicing as a CPA in Washington after that. Or would I need to go through Oregon since I now live here and transfer my license when I move. I should have my experience in exactly one year along with hopefully being done with my exams. After that happens, I’m moving back as soon as I can! Can someone tell me how I should go about getting licensed?

You can remain a Washington Candidate even though you live in Oregon. Just stick with your home state and get back to your family as soon as you can!

Hi There! So I was in a similar situation as you in which 3 years ago when I started to take the CPA exam, I was living/working in PA. I then decided to take a hiatus and find a better job and take a break from studying. This hiatus brought me back to my original home in NJ. According to NASBA, I am still considered a PA candidate and would be grand-fathered in and excluded from getting the 150 credit hours (as opposed to if I applied for NJ candidacy, I would be considered a “new” candidate and would need to receive 150 credit hours). And from what I understand (unless I'm misunderstanding), the CPA exam is a uniform exam. So it does not matter where you sit and take it, because it only matters where you apply for your license. So in your situation, you wouldn’t have to travel back to Washington to take the exam all the time, you should be able to sit for in Oregon. However when you pass, you should go through the Washington State Board of Accountancy (since that is where you applied and are considered a candidate of). Hope this helps or answers some of your questions?

P.S. You might want to call Washington's NASBA office and confirm that with them. Again, I hope I'm not misunderstanding anything, but I feel pretty confident that is the truth 🙂

@Ashley H I am in a like situation. I am a candidate through Indiana yet my husband was transferred to Mississippi. I take my exams through the Indiana board and test in Mississippi. The regulations are different in both states and once I pass I will see which state to licence in (one state requires 1 year work experience and a class I do not have and the other is 2 years work experience). I think because your situation is a neighbor state there may be some reciprocity and you can be licensed through one state and still be allowed to practice in the other. Check into that and see if it helps.

Thanks for the responses. Am I correct in that I could take the exam in an Oregon prometric under my Washington NTS? I read somewhere you could test at any approved testing center in a different state. Has anyone actually done this?

I am a New York candidate and have tested in NY, CT, and NJ. So I think you should be fine. I haven't tried other states, but think you can sit any where.

    A - 61, 91!!
    B - 78!
    F - 76!!!
    R - 71, 73, 74, 69, 77!!!!

    Finally done!

This is my 2nd attempt at the exam, I had two parts passed (failed many) and I stupidly quit, big mistake. Now I'm back and with a vengeance!

Oh that is great… just in case I can't make the 8 hour drive, I can just do a 1 1/2 hour drive possibly!

I'm in a similar situation. I took & passed all exams under WA candidate, but I will be moving to NY in July. In order to be licensed in WA, I need 2yrs of work experience (which I won't have by July).

What's my best way to get licensed? Should I apply in NY? I'm really confused. I called the state board, but they aren't much of a help…:(
