Eliminating Intercompany Transactions

If a large company owns numerous subsidiaries, is it possible for one or several subsidiaries to be out of balance after eliminating intercompany transactions? Are subsidiaries generally even reported as stand-alone entities??

i went through the section on elim entries somewhat quickly but i do eliminations for my current company and no, you should never be out of balance from a consolidated standpoint.
