Does anyone take exams as practice before taking it to pass?

I just passed my second part and was advised to schedule FAR for November even though I don’t really have enough time, at least I believe, to study to pass. The next time I’ll be able to take it, due to upcoming insanity/demanding pace at work, is February. The suggestion was to take it in November because it’s a very difficult part and at least it will give me an opportunity to see what the exam is like, therefore increasing the chances I’ll pass in February. I was also thinking it will keep me studying even though February is a while away.

    Any thoughts on this strategy?

    BEC 81
    REG 81
    FAR 76
    AUD 76

I wouldn't and don't see how it could help much unless you don't mind wasting $200. You can get plenty of practice by doing mock practice exams through Wiley, Becker or whatever study material you have.

Are you reimbursed for the exam? If so, I would go ahead and try to take it in late-November. I don't agree with your mentality though. Go into the exam trying to pass it! You can surprise yourself and get it out of the way before 2014. Good luck

Huh? That's the silliest suggestion I've ever heard! If you KNOW in advance, you won't be ready, do NOT schedule it! As MrsBing said – it's a waste of $200!!!!!!! If you have 2 parts left, you can schedule REG, AUD or BEC – whichever one you have left for November and take FAR later, when you know you will be ready! Even if it means end of Feb or beginning of April.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

Yeah..would not recommend. It's not even October yet so you still have over a month to study on top of whatever you've studied already. Just study harder now with the intent to pass in November. Wouldn't it be great to find out you passed FAR right before the holidays? That would be such a great feeling instead of knowing you need to pay another $200+ to sit for it next year. Good luck!

I skipped Q1 13 because of year end close and audit. Taking a test would have a been waste of time during that time.

    Reg - Passed 82 Nov 2012 - Becker
    Aud - Passed 86 May 2013 - Becker
    BEC - Passed 88 Aug 2013 - Becker
    FAR - Passed 88 Nov 2013 - Becker

If you might pass and $200'ish won't break the bank, its worth the gamble. If you KNOW you won't pass, its no longer a gamble and just giving away money. “Experiencing” the exam without passing provides nearly zero benefit towards the re-take, maybe even discouraging negative benefit LOL

When I read the title of this thread before I actually clicked on it, I thought you were talking about practice exams, and I was going to reply, “I would be surprised if anybody DIDN'T do this.” Then I actually read your question. Yeah, I don't think anybody does this.

    Gotta RTMFQ amirite guys???

If you schedule at the end of Nov you've got 2 months to study. Not clear exactly on how that wouldn't be enough time. I did it in about 8 weeks (you have closer to 10) and really didn't have more than 2 hours on weekdays and 3-4 on weekends to study.
