Do you pay for a new NTS each time you fail a section?

If I need to re-take a section, do I have to pay the section fees each time I sit for a section? In other words, if it takes someone three time to pass AUD, and the NSABA fee to take AUD is roughly $200, would it then cost that person $600 to gain credit for AUD?

    Thank you.

From the NASBA website (New York State):

“All First-Time applicants are required to pay both an application fee and an examination fee upon submission of the first-time application.

All Re-examination candidates are required to pay both a registration fee and an examination fee at the time of registration.”

    https://www.nasba.org/exams/cpaexam/newyork/#fees

I don't know if this varies by state.

I'm in CA. Reading the info on that page still leaves me unsure… Thanks for the help though.

Sorry, I realized I didn't exactly answer your question. If one fails a section, like AUD, s/he needs to re-apply for a new NTS in order to re-take that section (each time one takes the same section, s/he has to have a different NTS for that section). For example, I failed BEC in August, so when I got my score in Sept. I had to apply to re-take the exam and get a new NTS (couldn't use the used one). So I had to pay for the exam again, plus a registration fee. That was for NY.

I'm looking online now and I see the rules may be different for CA…

That answers my question. I am sitting for BEC in two days. I feel almost certain I will fail it. I am contemplating whether it is better to reschedule it for Jan, or take it, fail it, and still take it again in Jan.

    Any suggestions?

Is the only thing you lose by taking it now the re-examination fees?

If you can afford to pay the fees, then I think it might be a good idea to take the exam – you just might pass, and if not, you gain the experience of taking it.

Also, and I really don't know about this, but there may be a cancellation fee for cancelling so close to the exam date.

I don't know your entire situation, but I say take it. I did not feel prepared for BEC or AUD and managed to pass both. I do not feel prepared for FAR and was considering scheduling for January, but decided to stick with my schedule because 1) I may pass, 2) if not, it's the best practice test 3) I've already paid for the fees and don't want to pay a large reschedule fee on top of the fees I already paid. Especially since it's the end of the window. You'll get your score much quicker than if you take it in January and you won't have to worry about being limited to one time per window if you do not pass.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

@ZorinZ: You have to decide how ready you think you are. You said “almost certain I will fail it”. Does this mean you're nervous, or you really haven't prepared much? If it's the former, I say go for it and then see what happens. If it's the latter, don't you may want to reschedule since it's $100 to do that, and upwards of $300 to reapply and retake a section.

BEC has a lot less material than other sections, so two days is a lot of time to review the entire course (assuming you already understand most topics decently). If you're relearning too much, then move it back. If you're not in a time crunch, I personally would recommend two exams per testing window. One at the beginning of the window and one in the middle of the second month. And again one at the beginning of the next window and the second month of the next window. That gives you about 6 weeks for each section (adjust one week fwd/back for FAR®/BEC&AUD). Good luck!

    BEC 86 (08/30/11)
    FAR 84 (10/13/11)
    REG 88 (11/08/11)
    AUD 86 (11/29/11)
