I’m currently studying for FAR and have been reviewing the SIMs, I’m just curious if they are similar to what we’ll see on the actual test. I’ve heard mixed things. The one thing I’m especially curious about is the research question. Do they simply just ask you for the reference numbers for where to find certain topics in the codification?

I didn't use the Becker simulations, but I've seen a lot of comments saying that the ones on the exam were a lot tougher. As far as the research question, you're given a situation and asked where you'd find an answer in the ASC. You just have to be careful to make sure you read thru the section. Sometimes it will seem that a particular paragraph is correct, but if you read further you'll see that a later paragraph is closer to the question being asked. I don't know if they give partial credit on research, but there's no point in taking chances.

Becker is great at giving you the format. You will feel completely comfortable during your exam because the Becker software is exactly the same, including the research questions.

As far as difficulty, I think that Becker is slightly easier than the real thing, but is still a tremendous help. Doing the SIMS in Becker gets you to think about things in a different way than the MCQs which is needed for the real exam too.

I just took the FAR exam and I use Becker. I was disappointed in Becker's ability to prepare me for the Sims. First off they recommend that you leave about an hour to an hour 15 for the Sims and that is definitely not sufficient time. I would say you need a least and hour 30 or more. Second, the Sims that Beckers provides are much easier and contain much less information and require much less data entry then what I experienced on the exam. Also, the research questions on Becker are very easy where the exam questions are a lot more in depth. I would suggest you look around for the hardest simulations you can find. Good luck

if you're using Becker to prepare, try to do the AICPA released SIMs included with the Becker software, not just the regular Becker ones. they are almost always more difficult and are probably much better preparation

Last post is great advice. The AICPA released SIMS are much harder and more in depth than the Becker simulations
