Dilemma with FAR

Spent over 2 months preparing for my FAR exam that is in three days. I have gone through all lectures, MCQ, and SIMs. I am doing progress tests now and only scoring on average 50-60 percent. I’ve also been studying JEs pretty hard. I feel really uncomfortable going into this exam.

In addition, I’m right in the middle of tax season and my wife is due to have our first child in two weeks. Feeling a ton of pressure. Should I be putting this exam off until April or May? I feel super uneasy about MCQs and just okay on SIMs. Should I go through all MCQ homework again? How quickly do you get through the MCQ the second time and does it really help that much? For me, hammering out unlimited MCQs doesn’t seem to help all that much.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

I believe if you're not confident in the material, you will not do good but I've seen on a71 people that average 60s on ninja mcq and pass in the 75 range.

Given your situation, I would do what my buddy did: the last 2 days he just read the book, no mcq, just read. Took the exam and passed with a 79.

If its your first exam, I'd say put it off. If you have an exam expiring soon, just take the exam and hope for the best. Confidence is key.

Broag: Sounds like you have a lot going on right now. As if studying for the CPA exams wasn't enough! Given what you described, here is my 2 cents. Read below if you really want honest advice, not just a pep talk.

“Spent over 2 months preparing for my FAR exam that is in three days. I have gone through all lectures, MCQ, and SIMs. I am doing progress tests now and only scoring on average 50-60 percent. I've also been studying JEs pretty hard. I feel really uncomfortable going into this exam.” Going into ANY of the exams so far I have felt unprepared. You said you spent over 2 months studying, but that is really just a number. It sounds like you work full time, so you weren't studying full time. Was it really quality study time? If so, I would say you should be scoring higher averages.

“In addition, I'm right in the middle of tax season and my wife is due to have our first child in two weeks. Feeling a ton of pressure. Should I be putting this exam off until April or May?” First of all, congratulations! Having children will be the hardest thing you ever do – trust me, I have three of them. It may be a good idea to hold on until April/May as long as your NTS won't expire. But, I do have to forewarn you, you will have many sleepless nights ahead with a newborn, that coupled with tax time and you may find you don't have adequate study time for April/May either.

“I feel super uneasy about MCQs and just okay on SIMs. Should I go through all MCQ homework again?” Slow down and think about WHY you are so uneasy about the MCQ's. Is there one or more areas that you are really have a difficult time with? A person can do MCQs all day, every day and still fail the exam. That is what I did!!! I got to the point that I had the MCQs memorized. So while I knew the answer, I didn't COMPREHEND the answer. Take my advice…don't do it the way I did! I lost hundreds of dollars when I should have just paid the reschedule fee!

“How quickly do you get through the MCQ the second time and does it really help that much? For me, hammering out unlimited MCQs doesn't seem to help all that much.” Me neither! I learned my lesson my first time around with FAR. My second and third times going through the MCQs was S-L-O-W. I would write out a JE for EVERY possible question – even when it didn't require me to! And, for EVERY single question I got wrong I would make a flash card, but the key to that was to put it in my OWN wording and not just copy down the MCQ. I had to dig deep to get through FAR. I did it and YOU can too!!!

Best of luck! Let us know what you decide! All the Ninjas are rooting for you because we have all been in the same boat!!!

I'd say it all comes down to whether or not you have the time to put it off. If you seriously feel that you need more time and you have more time (i.e. no sections expiring) then push it back. On the other hand, not many people that have spent any time with the FAR material walk into the exam feeling like they are totally prepared and are going to kill it. Just too much info.

@CTM what did you do different that you feel you were able to turn the corner on your 4th attempt at FAR?

I really have to disagree with everyone else. The test is in 3 days, already paid for, and that baby is still in mama's belly. My scores were nothing to look at going into the test but I got lucky and was tested mostly on my strong areas. Same could happen for you. Stop thinking about if you should put the test off and spend the next 3 days really studying. Maybe even take a day or two off of work?

FAR sucks, no one has a warm fuzzy feeling going in. Get in there and take it, you have a chance of passing! And if you don't pass at least you'll know what it's like to sit for FAR, which is half the battle.

I have to agree with brooks. Go ahead and sit for the exam in this window. Relax for a few days, take care of your wife, and wait for your score. If you fail, you will have the next window to take it again and the material will still be somewhat fresh on your brain.

@Skillet, passing FAR was pretty simple for me…STUDY EVERYTHING!! I never even looked at gov't or nfp until my last attempt and I never put in the time required to pass it. FAR is a marathon of material and I always procrastinated and put off the stuff I didn't feel like messing with. You've passed three other sections and gotten that close to FAR so I'd say you know what it takes and will pass.

I'll definitely be sitting for the exam in a couple of days. Hopefully luck finds my way. I think I'm going to just try and re-read my weak areas to refresh/review JEs and keep doing MCQ when I can.

My NTS for FAR expires 7/5/15 so I can sit in the next two windows if need be. I failed my first attempt at REG, but only because I ran out of time. I'll be retaking REG sometime this summer.

@LKD CPA — My weekly study time consisted of about 20-30 hours on average. I know those are just numbers, but that time spent was doing lectures, MCQs and reading the book. Took me FOREVER to get through this stuff. Hoping my recall will be good enough!!

    Thanks, again

I am really happy to hear that you're sitting for it. You got this. It may not seem like it but the information is in there. Just be sure to do a final review of government/NFP. Good luck!!!

How did you feel going into/coming out of FAR? Seems like you know what your doing according to your test results!

Did you use Ninja MCQs? I'm considering on getting them for the other sections, but not sure if they're worth it. I'm a Becker user, by the way.

Oh @Broag, I have a story for you.

For a million reasons I won't bore you with I took the bus to my exam which was an hour away. I had my Becker final review book I was trying to read but just gave up because I literally had a headache. I was simply hoping for a miracle. I got a small one in that I had many questions that were my strong topics. I felt terrible at the end of it. I did take a 4 minute or less break in between each testlet and the SIMS to stuff some food in my face, grab a drink of water, and go to the bathroom. A luxury I didn't have last week for BEC.

Afterwards, I had 40 minutes to kill before my bus came. I stopped by the restaurant next door and ingested a lot of wine in that small period of time convinced that the FAR hell had ended with a definite fail. Then, all good and tipsy I got on the bus and I kid you not had a total crying meltdown for the better part of 20 minutes. Thank goodness it was a coach bus so no one could see me.

So the long answer to your question is that FAR is the worst test ever and I was a basket case wreck right before and after. I also strongly contemplated rescheduling.

I'd bet money that you handle it better than me 😉

PS, I did not use Ninja for FAR but I did use them for BEC. I would recommend them. They're very different from Becker but there's clear value in both.

Wow. Maybe I'll kickback a few Jamesons before I enter the Prometric Test Center.

Good luck on your BEC score!
