    Hello,
I went back to school for an accounting certificate which provides enough credits to sit for the CPA. Advanced Accounting was not a requirement and I was advised to take business law instead. Is it possible to pass FAR without having taken this class? Any advice is appreciated.

For sure, mine was so long ago (about 5yrs) I forgot most it. Also, there isn't a lot of overlap in material insomuch as basic principles. You'll be fine!

I think so. There was almost nothing from adv. acct. on FAR and even in the review course, the coverage of adv. acct stuff was minimal. As long as you understand those things in the review course, like inter-entity transactions and governmental/nonprofit, you shall be fine. I'd suggest getting ahold of the adv acct textbook by Joe-Ben Hoyle, et al
and reading Chapter 5 and the chapters on govt/npo and maybe partnership accounting if you have time. Failing that, defer to your review course. I was horrified, some time ago, to see how much of FAR comes from intermediate acct. I worked really hard in my Adv Acct courses, thinking it was all gonna be on FAR! But, I guess it kinda makes sense in some way…. for the SAT exam, you need only know algebra and geometry. You don't need calculus or any higher-level math. They wanna see if you know the basics of math inside and out, and your ability to use logic in the framework of mathematics. The CPA exam is approximately the same way.

I didn't take advanced and while I havent taken the exam yet I don't feel like I missed out big time. Everything has been covered in my review course.

You will be okay, but the chapter that covers Advanced Accounting will be challenging for you. Just try to do your best in that chapter and know how to answer some of the tougher mcq’s correctly. It will take time, but you should be able to get a decent understanding.

Thankfully, I had just taken Advanced Accounting in undergrad, so it came easy to me on my FAR exam.

Goodluck and just grind through it my friend.

Thanks so much for the feedback! Do you know which sections in Becker are specific to advanced accounting? I just did inter company transactions last week and i know that is an advanced accounting topic, and maybe the government accounting units?
