I dont want to get too ahead of myself as I still have regulation to pass….but looking to the future I have been toying with the idea of getting my Certified Valuation Analyst designation once I am done the CPA…from my understanding the process involves one exam and one case….but does anyone know of someone who has this designation and just how rigorous the process actually is and how valuable the designation is???

    Thanks in advance

I work with someone who has a CVA. He is a partner in the small firm where I currently work. He took the exam later on in his career (10+ years after the CPA exam). I don't know how much business it has brought the firm, but I think he is one of the only ones who has even tried for the credential around our small area. Additionally, whenever we have to do a business valuation, he obviously gets the task. I think it definitely adds an additional level of credibility.when he works in that area of the practice. The way he described it, you basically take a seminar, take an exam (that is not easy but not CPA caliber either), and prepare a sample valuation. I don't think it took him more than a month or so. From my point of view, it is worth it depending on what area you're going in. If you're in private or governmental, it may not be worth it, but if you're in any public accounting field, I would say if you are interested, why not look more into the process and take the exam? As far as I am concerned, the more letters you can put after your name, the better. Why not take the exam since it gives you more flexibility and may give you an edge later on down the road.

I am sure you have been to the NACVA's website, but if not, here it is: https://www.nacva.com/cti/CTIBusinessVTC.asp

You may also look into the ABV designation, which, as I understand is similar to the CVA designation, but is offered by the AICPA and you become a “CPA/ABV”
