Could anyone help me with this?

I have a BA in Political Science and a minor in accounting. I’m currently pursuing a Masters in taxation. I would like to work for the IRS and am planning on applying to a position in their tax audit/investigations department; however, I need a CPA to sign off on my general accounting experience for my CPA license. I’m planning on taking my CPA exam mid next year. Would the IRS be able to sign off on my general accounting? Do they have enough staff with CPA licenses?

If you work with a CPA that can authentically attest to your experience, then you should be good to go. If they're willing to sign off (and they're a bonafied CPA), then you shouldn't worry if it will be accepted or not.

As an IRS employee, currently a TCO, waiting for an RA/CID position to open up. I have passed the CPA exam and am waiting for my time requirement to be fulfilled. The IRS does not make professional certification a priority. There are very few CPAs in management roles. I am not saying you will not work under a CPA but the odds are against you.

Additionally plan on paying for the exam and test prep yourself, they do not provide assistance for the exam fees. They did give me a copy of the CPA Exam Matrix review course but I used Becker (got a government employee discount), I was not a fan of Exam Matrix.

As far as applying to the IRS goes start now if a position opens up. There has been a two-year hiring freeze and it has been extended indefinitely. There is a log jam of qualified candidates, some with a lot of veterans points. Mainly jobs are opening up for attrition at a rate of 4 to 1.

Word of advice, if you have the time and money pick up the Certified Fraud Examiner too. There seems to be more respect in the service for a CFE than a CPA.
