haha…no…main events are usually the title fights.

Georges St. Pierre is one of the most-popular fighters in the world and he's 170.

How would St. Pierre do against an average heavyweight? I know this is a hypothetical because the little guys dont fight the big guys, but could the best little guy beat an average big guy?

Don't think Silva will ever lose unless he beats himself by losing focus/motivation.

That is, unless Dana sets up a fight against Jon Jones at a catchweight (or maybe GSP). Then all bets are off!

@mini – your average little guy pro mma fighter would likely destroy Joe Bob 250lb'r in a parking lot. Most people not only don't know how to grapple (not that you would ever want to grapple in a street fight…that could be a disaster), but they don't know how to box.

Even the top “little guy” mma pros wouldn't do well against a mid-tier heavyweight pro fighter I don't think.

@sim – I used to think GSP could bulk up and do well against Silva, but I don't hold that opinion any more. I think GSP would get knocked out.

Jon Bones on the other hand….glad to see him get punched by Machida — he needed that. I think it would be a good matchup and arguably the biggest MMA fight to date $$$$-wise.

Mini- As good as GSP is, I can't see him doing much with a top guy like Brock Lesnar (who outweighs him by about 70-80lbs). An average heavyweight, however, GSP would probably figure out a way to win. GSP would probably look to survive until the big guy to tires out, and then get after it!!!!

So…you think GSP could take out Roy Nelson? GSP is my favorite fighter but I think it would end badly for him.

Being the GSP is a cerebral fighter I would at least give him a chance to figure out a way. I wouldn't put any $ on it though. Roy is a tough guy and GSP is not exactly known to be a finisher.

I guess answering the original question would depend on if you are considering an average heavyweight or an avarage “UFC” heavywight. I would consider anyone who fought in the big show to be above average.

I consider Roy Nelson to be a gatekeeper in the HW division. At this stage in his career, he doesn't appear to want to brawl with anyone. I personally thought he stood a good chance of getting out-boxed by Nick Diaz.

@Jeff — You're totally right about most neandrathals who pick street fights not knowing how to box. I boxed for 5 years throughout college (nothing major, a couple local amateur comps, mostly for exercise) and we would always see new members join who would always seem to want to prove something to someone (to whom, I'll never know). But I used to LOVE to spar with people; it was the only place I knew of where you could crack your best friend in the nose, he could drill you in the eye, then you could both laugh about it over a couple beers! I'm about 5'9, 155lbs, and I distinctly remember sparring with guys with half a foot and 60 lbs on me who should have destroyed me on reach alone. Most of the time, though, it was a total joke, they would get in there with me and start throwing well-telegraphed haymakers, trying to take my head off. So my routine was always the same: slip-jab, slip-jab, slip-jab-jab, opponent starts breathing heavy from all the missed haymakers, slip-jab-cross, parry now much weaker haymaker and counter with a right cross, slip-left hook-right uppercut. Although I do remember one chap catching me with one of his hammer of Thor haymakers and putting me down for a few minutes. I have always said the two deadliest weapons in a fight are 1) a good jab and 2) speed.

I'm not a huge MMA fan, but I always love watching GSP…he's like a little spider monkey! Also, I know this is the caveman in me talking, but I really like watching Brock Lesnar…you know everytime he throws one of his enormous meathooks at his opponent, a bloody aftermath will invariably follow. He's such a total d-bag though…I wonder if he does that for show (former wrestler, right?) or if he's really an a-hole.

My base is Taekwondo so my preference is to kick someone in the head vs. box. I finally forced myself to learn how to box and got busted up doing it. Once I figured out that if I keep my hands up it's not that bad lol.

When we do MMA sparring (keep in mind that we're going about 65%…no one is trying to be a hero)…I use my boxing to jab the wrestlers – who cannot box – to keep from taking me down.

I've also figured out that if you actually throw more than one punch, people don't like it and cover up. 🙂

It took me about a year to stop being lazy and keep my hands up though.

I also took up jiu-jitsu and did a tournament this summer (I went 1-4 … 3 of the matches were with a Gi and I had never grappled with one before haha).

It's great exercise and is for fun only…you won't see ‘Jeff the 33-year old Accountant' on the Ultimate Fighter anytime soon.

One thing that it has taught me is that the dudes who act tough in public don't actually train on any level and probably cannot actually fight.

@BaseballCPA: Another sport in which you can beat your friends up and still be friends – roller derby. :0) I LOVE IT!

I've actually complimented a girl for giving me a giant bruise on my upper arm.
