I need some advice, please– here is the situation. I’m getting a post-bac accounting certificate, and right now I’m taking the last class that I need for my certificate. So I should be done with my program when I am done with this class. However, my school also has a list of recommended classes to take if you’re sitting for the CPA exam, and there is one class left on that list that I have not taken. It’s advanced financial accounting, and it covers topics like foreign currency translation, business combinations, and partnerships.

There is only one teacher option for this class, who is generally considered to not be a very good teacher and to grade pretty harshly. My GPA is pretty high– 3.8 something, so I’d prefer not to take a class where I might get a bad grade and might not learn very much anyway.

I had decided on not taking the class and scheduled FAR for 5/9, thinking that I can pick up those small gaps in material for FAR elsewhere. Does this seem like the right decision? Thanks in advance for any input!

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)

Don't put this on your job application: “I have a high GPA, but only because I avoided the hard course.”

    BA Mathematics, UC Berkeley
Certificates in CPA and EA preparation, College of San Mateo
    CMA I 420, II 470
    FAR 91, AUD Feb 2015 (Gleim self-study)

You'll probably be fine as long as you review those areas with the review materials. The credits I used to finish my 150 all came from my abandoned career path of engineering. So no optional/advanced accounting classes, and calculus/physics doesn't help with the CPA exam.

MOD, I've taken several hard courses. I'm not sure why you're assuming that I haven't. But those were with teachers who, while they were hard graders with difficult material, at least explained things well. I've heard this one does not.

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)

I have been out of school for a while and learned all those topics through my CPA review course. So don't worry about the class. You are ready to start taking these exams.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

Skip the class and just use your review materials. I've been out of school for a while and I haven't taken FAR yet, but I don't think you need to devote time/money/energy to studying for that class when you can use those resources to study your review materials and get the same result.

Thanks, guys, that's what I was thinking– the tuition payment was a factor, too. I was going to take this class next term all along, but a CPA at work who went to my school said he wished he'd taken business law instead of this one. So that's what got me thinking I could get away without taking it. Those subjects are all in my Wiley books.

Once this current class wraps up in a few weeks, it's 100% focus on FAR!
