Has anyone thought about their next move after obtaining their CPA license? Are you planning to remain with your current company or will you seek out a more desirable position with a new company? I believe being a CPA will improve your marketability but I also think you need some solid work experience to be the cream of the crop. Thoughts?

I guess in the short term I will stay with my current company. Its a small CPA firm that specializes in tax only. But I am thinking that I will eventually (maybe end of 2012 or early 2013) leave for a bigger firm. well, at least thats the plan.

imo you definitely need some solid accounting experience even after obtaining your cpa. there is just SO much to learn in tax/audit. since i don't work for a big 4, i'm afraid CPAs with 2-year experiences are a dime a dozen.

the only reason why i'd want to move to a new company is for better benefits, pay, and working hours — and hopefully for a prestigious tech company/startup and eventually move up the ladder. my concern is..why would they chose me over a big 4 candidate?

Will stay with my current company. I work for a Fortune 500 company and will be joining the Internal Audit Department next year. Never thought of working for Big 4. I love it and don't have to work long hours. It's another career path you can take beside public accounting.

I'll leave for a bigger, better company with more work benefits. I work at a small CPA firm right now while working on my CPA exam. But my boss knows that I won't be here forever and he knows that I want more out of my career than I small one partner firm.

I know plenty of people I graduated college with did not have any accounting experience except maybe a semester internship or something, so I think having a year or two of experience is a huge deal especially after you become a CPA too.

Not for the next year or so…….after few years working long hours, I am now at a small company working from 8:30-5:00 😉

This will not last forever. I do like the big corporate environment, never worked for a big 4 and I think I am too old for that lol…….

Is the 30's a good age to join a big 4?

    Done 😉

I'm planning on sticking with my current company. I want to have a record of being at a company for at least 4 years, with hopefully a promotion and maybe get some management experience, before leaving. Or heck, maybe I'll just stay.:-) My job is extremely stressful, but I figure that once I get a promotion I will be able to pass most of the quarterly financial reports that I file on to someone else, which will hopefully reduce my stress. I'd like to be able to focus on more big picture stuff.
