    Sup yall,

I don’t know if i’m being a lil b or what but this exam.. the discipline, no life, no internet, no ps3, is just killing me.

Here’s the thing.. I don’t have passion for accounting. I dont really want to work in an office and deal with the politics and people (for some reason accountants think they are the S). I’ve tried tricking myself to believe this is right.. its good.. and im happy but im not.

The truth is I wanted to study geology (any aspect of it).. Accounting was just me being a sheep and following the money.

I looked up more information about petroleum engineering and other geo-science stuff. I’m looking at the masters programs at CSULB (cal state) Supposedly you can enter a program even if you don’t have a geology background or degree. You’ll have to do extra classes though (which is no big deal for me).

Here’s the kicker.. Im 27.. im old. I still live with my mama.. were poor. I don’t know if I could go back to school full-time and take a part time job (need that full-time money). I could go to school part-time and work full-time but my accounting job doesn’t really give me that option.. were low on manpower atm.

Anyways.. I contributed a lil to this site so if anyone can help a brother out and respond i’ll appreciate it. Thanks and happy 11.11.11.

You are never to old to go to school. I went back at 39 and finished my second degree. I had to do it part time and it took me three years taking two classes a semester but I did it. My first semester back while I was in line to get my parking permit, I'm not kidding, there was a guy there who looked to be in his late seventies, early eighties going back to school!! That made me feel not so OLD!

cal state long beach! I was going to go there but decided to go to SDSU! anywho life is short you don't want to spend the rest of your life doing something you clearly don't want to do. The best part is that you realize this @ 27 and not 57! If it were me I would go to school and work full time ( I am a work horse like that)! but I get it my lifestyle is not like most. Only thing I can say is at least you will get financial aid aka student loans and you could possible live off that until you receive your Masters only thing is you will have to pay the money back. Is there demand for what you will be receiving your masters in?? or at least can you make the money you need to payback the student loans??

It would be a shame if you did something you did not like to do the rest of your life.

Go for the Geology degree/program, whatever makes you happy. You only live once, so make it a pleasurable existence as much as possible.

ROACH, you are nevevr to old, I am 31 and just started my journey to the CPA. I also find acconting to be boring, but it has so many areas to work that the boring part doesn't discourage me. As for you situation, if you are in the middle of the CPA process, and you need the full time job, I will recommend you to finish the process and then get a job in one geology related company and work your way around. The CPA can open many doors.

You can do it, if its what you want. I went back to school at 33 years old with a 10 year old and 3 year old. Somehow found it in me to stay all the way through to my masters and this CPA thing. Its been 8 years, I now have an 18 and 12 year old.

Its NOT for everybody, don't get me wrong….but it certainly can be done.

What inspired me at the time when I made my career change was Steve Job's speech to Standford University's class of 2005.

    “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish.”

    Hope this will help you.

I'm halfway through Jobs' authorized biography. Pretty sad but interesting.

@ROACH, I don't have any passion for accounting either. None. And I despise working in an office and dealing with office politics. I recently gave my notice at work for this and many other reasons. I'm going the self-employment route now.

Many times I've considered retiring from accounting and doing something that I'm passionate about. For now, I've decided to stay on the accounting track, and to pursue my passions on the side. A career in accounting can be lucrative and flexible if you run your own practice or work as a consultant. This could leave you with time and money to also do things that you are passionate about. Just something to think about.

Thanks for the feedback all. I was thinking and thought to myself that I need to think things through.

I got an audit exam in 2 1/2 weeks so I'll keep myself busy focusing on that until then.

I have plenty of time to figure things our since I won't be starting grad school until Fall 2012.

Maybe if I pass 1 or 2 parts of the exam I'll feel better about things.. for now i'm just looking for a way out.

Ya roach…read the occupy wall street thread we had. I love art, flash animation, and sprite editing. I do it on the side as a hobby, because I don't think there is a job for me there…and I need to eat/pay rent LOL

    @ROACH,

I'm glad you're going to keep pushing through. If after you pass the exam, you still want to pursue the geology path, then go for it. But for now, I say finish up this exam–then make a decision. No backing out now!

    Is your degree in accounting?
