Cannot verify experience?

I worked under a CPA for several years up until he retired a few months ago. The rules in Louisiana state a minimum of 1 year experience within the preceeding 4 years so that’s not a problem. My question is this – what if for whatever reason (and hopefully nothing will) this one person can’t verify on the application or whatever form that I did work for him & the type of work I do? Does my entire CPA life depend on this one person? Should I hire a security guard & doctor to follow him around until I pass the exam & he signs whatever forms needed? Waiting on my last score & (stupidly) thinking ahead got me to wondering about this. Not to be morbid but anything can happen.

LOL!! I would have him fill out your form now! I don't believe you have to wait to get it filled out till after your test. But it might vary by state,

In my experience I think it might 🙁 Our state has 1000 hour audit requirement and 2 years experience. I had an employer who filled out my form and only gave me 100 hours of audit experience when I had worked well over 600-700 hours for him. The state board said basically the employer could give me any hours he wanted.

Luckily have all my time and experience at my new employer. Lemme know what you find out though.

Our state has the requirements listed on the site where we apply for the exam so I would suggest you check your state site. It also has the form for employer's to fill out there as well. I was an intern for the guy and then went to full time. He was able to put in how long I was a part-time employee vs. full time.

As a backup plan, you could buy a very large life insurance policy on this person, naming yourself as the beneficiary 🙂

Good luck securing the work experience requirement…….

FAR 86, BEC 82, AUD 80, REG 83 Done, thank God - CA

brla – What does your state say about who verifies the experience. Each state sets their own requirements. For example, I am from Indiana, beleive it or not we need 2 years experience can go 10 years back, no set guidelines that I can find about type of experience. This experience needs to be verified by a active license IN CPA that has direct knowledge of your experience. There is not requirement to have worked for or be supervised by this CPA. They are requied to do a notarized statement verifying the experience.

Bottom line, you need to contact your state board to find the specifics on your verification of experience requirements.

    Good Luck.

I read all the information on the LA state board site on the license application information. It's a little confusing who needs to verify what, mentions a CPA supervisor then 2 levels up must also sign. No idea. I tried to call the state board, got 2 transfers, one I dunno & a disconnection. Classic. I will call the state board when/if that time is ever necessary but didn't know if this was ever addressed before here that someone might know the answer. Thanks all.
