Can I put ‘CPA’ on my Resume if I am licensed in Colorado but living in California?

For example, at the top of my resume “John Johnson, CPA” and then under certifications put “Certified Public Accountant (Licensed in Colorado.)”

Can I put it on my business card if I am licensed in Colorado, live in California, but do not work in public accounting? Lets say I am the controller of a small manufacturing company of less than 50 employees.

    Thanks.

I think it's fine to put it on your resume. But if you are not licensed in the state I wouldn't put it on the business card.

This is a great question. I'm wondering the same thing

I was thinking of putting on top of the resume, if a CPA in NY but living/looking for work out of state for example:

    John Doe, CPA (NY)

THis might be the safest thing to do but the thing is it can look awkward at the top there with some state abbreviations. I'd rather do what you suggest (if it's OK) which is just put CPA and then further down on resume specify the state of license

With the business card you definitely need to be very careful because you don't want to be seen as holding yourself out as a CPA in another state where you're not (yet) licensed. When you go to apply for reciprocity in that state you then want to be licensed in, I think they ask you on the reciprocity application whether you ever held yourself out as a CPA in that state on a business card or any form of advertisement…so just be especially careful with this!

@ nnenna as you know after we pass, we cant put CPA anywhere after name until licensed. i think instead put somewhere, maybe in the summary, “Passed all 4 sections of Uniform CPA Exam” or something like that.

I believe in CA you cannot hold yourself out as a CPA unless you are licensed in California. I think this was in the CA ethics exam…

I think CPA should be a national thing. Now with international testing sites opening up in other countries, candidates have to choose a state even if not residing there or in the US. I really think we should have a US CPA license.
