Can I pass FAR w/out understanding bonds?

5 days to go and I still don’t understand bonds. Hated them in college, hate them now, will forever hate them. Convertible bonds, detachable and nondetachable warrants, stated rate and market rate, premium vs discount, blah blah blah!!!

If I am comfortable in all other areas of FAR (maybe with the exception of diluted EPS), will I be okay going into this exam without understanding bonds?

Can anyone share any pointers on how to understand bonds? Also, how difficult are the real exam questions compared to Becker’s insanely worded bond MCQ’s?

    Thanks in advance!

    B - 80 (10/06/11)
    A - 84 (01/03/12)
    R - 81 (02/16/12)
    F - 82 (11/23/11)

    Thank you Jesus!

Every exam is different. I only took FAR once, but I can tell you from taking AUD and BEC more than once, I always felt like one topic was heavily tested on the exam, however, each time I took it, it would be a different topic. You could get almost no bonds or a ton of bonds. I would recommend KNOWING bonds inside and out because if you do get heavily tested on them, you will need to know what you are doing.

    FAR- 75
    REG- 82
BEC- 73, 79!! Its over. Am I dreaming?
    AUD- 74, 74, 88

Can you pass without knowing Bonds? Sure. Do you need to be at the top of your game in every other area? Absolutely.

This exam is so unfair. There is nothing uniform about the “Uniform CPA Exam”. How is it uniform when one person can get 15 bond questions and the person next to them gets 2?

    Praying I get 2!

Ill say as much as I can, most of the bond questions I had were basic. Know IFRS, Govt, and Non Profit as much as you can.

    FAR 11/18
    AUD
    REG
    BEC
....this of course assumes the world doesnt end prior to.

I guess my concern would be if you don't understand bonds at all, I can't imagine you have a very good grasp on Leases either. And between those two, you will definitely get one that yields several questions. If you do understand Leases, start trying to apply some of the same principles to bonds as they are very similar.

From my experience, yes you need to know them. But if you get really lucky you might not see them a lot. Have you ever heard of the quote, “Luck favors the PREPARED.” I recommend you go them until you are blue in the face because you will certainly have a question or two at least on the topic.

Don't let bonds beat you! I think you have enough time to devote more to the topic. Do an internet search to see if you can get some additional information to understand the concepts. I seem to find good information when I do a search of the Wiley FAR book on Google Books.

I found out about the Principles of Accounting website from someone on here. Here's the link to the Bonds info there…

should you earn the CPA designation if you can't learn something that really isn't that difficult?

    probably not…

    REG - 81
    BEC - 88
    AUD - 85
    FAR - 81

I studied so hard on bond, and the hard work paid off. I passed FAR!

@ valueofnothing – I believe the OP is asking if they can just skip bonds due to time constraints. I am sure if this person had the time, they could learn bonds.

Don't be so judgmental – sheesh!
