I always take note of how CPAs are portrayed on TV and in movies. They are usually portrayed as very intelligent, but also boring, predictable and nerdy with no life outside of accounting. I actually have observed a lot of this in real life as well in my 7 years plus in public accounting. Many of the senior level people I work with, and many of the people I have observed at conferences, etc. seem to actually fit that mold very well. I know what I am saying sounds like an insult to such individuals, but that is not where I am going with this. I actually feel like these individuals are the “real” accountants, while I am an imposter of sorts.

I am not in love with accounting and don’t enjoy talking about accounting outside of work. I also have so many interests and likes that are very non-accountant like. I like weight training and conditioning, MMA (watching it), heavy metal and old school rap, juvenile humor (like Friday, Borat and Jack-Ass type movies), etc. I fear that I will never feel like a “real” CPA because I am just not built like one.

Any other non-traditional accountants out there? What makes you different and do you ever feel it makes you less of a “real” accountant?

You hit the jack pot with your comment. Every time I say I am pursuing the CPA license. Everbody looks at me with a weird face and say: “You CPA, but that is so boring and you are not like that…” I go right back at them: “It is boring if you let it be, I guess. But, I love it and I find it in no way boring.'

If you lined me up with any 10 accountants, I would be the one who was the most “different” from the norm every time. I've been told numerous times by people that they were shocked to find out what I do for a living because I don't fit that mold. I used to hide my outside interests at work because I didn't want to stick out and not fit in with the group, but now that I'm more experienced I find that my interests and hobbies have benefited me with clients, coworkers and my career in general. Keep bodybuilding, beauty pageanting, MMA'ing or whatever because it's part of what separates you from the pack. Even though it's not work related it can help you excel in your career and people will probably like you more in general.

I was invited to dinner with a friend, so I was just meeting this couple for the first time and when I said what I do the girl said something like “but you have such good people skills”….lol. Um, okay…so would an accountant typically sit in the corner typing on a calculator? Or ask to see your latest tax return? People are just too funny.

I party and drink a lot. I travel a lot. Bleach blonde. Few tattoos. Dirty mouth. Can cook like a champ. People laugh when they find out my accounting major and future CPA plans… I laugh back knowing I will be $$$$ than them!

To be honest, I have A LLOOTTTT of friends in high level jobs, like engineers, managers, VP's, etc, and they ALL have very similar lifestyles like that I listed about myself. It makes me feel better about my habits 😛

I sail, I shoot skeet, I play the piano, and I speak German, yet many people in my new office are much more interesting than me. Most of the people I've met in public accounting – at least with the bigger firms – are pretty cool people.

Hello everyone! First post here. It seems we, as self proclaimed accountants, have varied personalities. We may, as accountants, have this shell that we knowingly or unknowingly put up, to make us appear more accountant-like (thanks to the perception from pop-culture). I've struggled with identifying as a typical accountant, actually still do to this day, since I've still yet to get my foot in the door to the profession. Had absolutely no luck obtaining a job after graduating college. Passing this test hopefully can get me to that first step.

As for me I enjoy music. Almost anything I'll listen to (except country =P). 80's and 90's rock. Electro and dance rock. Daft Punk is one of my all time favorite groups. Love to dance. Once I get my career started and obtained enough resources I'd like to get into dj-ing. Football is my favorite sport. Had to play less fantasy football, to focus on FAR. Cooking is my passions. If I could do just one thing all day, it would have to be playing games, [of all sorts;board(Cantan), console(Final Fantasy), card(poker, spades, drinking) computer(civilizationIV)], of course having Pandora on the whole time. d-,-b Alright back to studying i guess -_-

    Good luck everyone, Study Hard.
