Authoritative literature for SIMS

I posted recently about my FAR experience and I read some responses of how people saying the authoritative literature helped them figure out how to solve for some simulations. While I believe them, I still find it unbelievable to use it to solve an entire SIM especially when it requires JE. Additionally, finding the necessary info is not only extremely time consuming, but to interpret the stodgy information would be difficult . So I don’t think it is useful for FAR unless it is a research question.

However I have heard this more often done for the AUD simulations. So I was wondering, when I practice the AUD sims, should I learn how to do it from the authoritative literature. This seems plausible as I often hear people finishing the exam with time left over etc. At the same time, I don’t want to be dependent/use it if to do so would not benefit me in solving the SIMS. Thank you for your input.

It's definitely useful, but don't walk into the exam thinking “I'll just use the authoritative literature for every sim and not study the concepts.” It's important to have a baseline and a good understanding of the concepts. I think the authoritative literature is more useful in a situation where you get a question that's on material that you've never seen before–I had 2 of those in REG and 1 or 2 in AUD and in those situations the authoritative literature really helped. However, I was able to answer the other SIMs in those sections based on my own knowledge and studying.

    REG (2/24/12) - 89
    AUD (4/5/12) - 89
    FAR (5/31/12) - 91
    BEC (7/7/12) - 84

the authoritative literature will tell you how to treat a transaction (sometimes); but you still need to know the basics as far as how to do the JE and the exact terminology to search for. I would say study like you don't have it available to you.

I will say that for REG, I had 3 simulations on one of the most obscure topics. It wasn't even covered by becker; however by looking through the IRC, I found exactly what I needed to do and how to treat the item. Doing the SIM was easy after that. I think some questions are designed so that you HAVE to use the research tab. It's also important that you are very fluent with it…practice practice practice.

Using Becker, Ninja Notes, and CpaReviewForFree

    FAR - 87 (2/17)
    REG - 89 (4/21)
    AUD - 89 (5/31)
    BEC - 89 (7/11)
