Are the SIMS weighted on "the curve"?

We all know that the MC’s are weighted – such that you start out with a medium testlet, if you do well, you get a hard testlet, and the hard testlet’s questions are worth more points for correct answers than the medium testlet.

However, what about the SIMS? Is each individual SIM compared to others who took the same exact SIM? Or is your total SIMS score just compared against all others performance on the SIMS?

Here this might help you a bit on how the test is graded and weighted:

I'm trying to figure out the same thing since I missed my research question and am worried it's worth 6-8% of my grade.

This is the quote I think is most relevant:

“Scaled scores on the multiple-choice and task-based simulation portions of the Exam

are calculated using formulas that take into account factors such as whether the question was answered correctly and the relative difficulty of each question.”

So from what I gather on that sentence is the TBS used a scaled score system too depending on difficulty. Therefore the sims cannot each be worth 6-8% individually. However I'm not too sure?? Maybe from that sentence they mean just the multiple-choice are scaled.

Actually now I read the first sentence more, the and implies that the TBS are also based on scaled scores….

Yes, I agree that the SIMS are based on scaled scores. But I am wondering – for example – if I had an extremely hard research question, am I compared to all others with that exact same research question, or all of the research questions in general?

Well if my interpretation of the quote is correct, then the research questions would then be scaled on difficulty. Research question is only considered a type of question (such as a TBS for non-monetary exchanges etc.) But the type of questions can vary in difficulty. So each individual research question is probably scaled based on how other people do on that specific research question instead of in general.

Because, once again this is assuming if I'm correct, some people can get ridiculously easy research questions compared to ridiculously hard research questions. I feel like that makes it unfair if one research question is scaled on all research questions in general. It just wouldn't make sense to compare your sims to be compared to all others performance of sims because people get such a variety of sims.

From my research, the main argument i've seen really is whether or not the TBS questions are divided equally among the 40%, therefore 6-8% each. If that is case, then I dont think the research question can be scaled at all….. if you get it wrong you lose 6-8% or if you get it right you get 6-8%.

One of my friends once said that the research question is only worth about 3 points. I'm not sure where or how he got this information, but that's what he said he heard.

Before the new 2011 exam format, research questions were worth very little, as in 1 or 2 points. So idk if he was talking about that, or maybe now they're worth 3 points?
