Anyone else using free materials online?

Has anyone else done well with just using free practice questions online? I’m re-taking FAR soon. Also using Gleim’s book. I used Roger originally, don’t really feel like studying from it again this time around. Still thinking about doing the $67/month Ninja but not quite there yet. Might do it after getting my tax refund!

I'm also considering purchasing ninja monthly to supplement Wiley. How do you like the CPA review for free website?

I passed FAR using old college textbooks & CpaReviewforFree, & REG using an old Becker book purchased off ebay w/ the Wiley 14-days free trial. Also did the AICPA sample test. So I guess it is doable, but it was a horrible experience.

One of the biggest problems I had with doing that is figuring out what the updated materials were, and that ate up a lot of study time by trying to compare what is in the Blueprints with the materials available on the site. Cpareviewforfree is good for free material, but I'm pretty sure there are materials on there that's no longer relevant and/or not updated to include any new materials that are now tested.

Because of that, I realized how big of a disadvantage it is by trying to scrape by using free materials. So for my remaining exams, I decided to invest in Ninja Monthly just because of the amount of resources you get for the $67.

So my recommendation is, at a bare minimum, invest the $67 in Ninja Monthly, even if it is just for the MCQs, & look around for other review material providers that offer a good free trial just to get some practice Sims in. You definitely don't want to go into the test blind regarding the Sims. Getting surprised by the Sims is definitely the worst feeling I ever had. But by going the “free” route, be prepared to know it's an additional burden.

I used CPA review for free as a supplement for 2 sections and was able to pass them both. I started using it for my BEC retake and I believe it made a huge difference.

@pdiddy2000 – cpareviewfor free is good. I think their materials are up to date. Somebody else on here recommended that website to me. The guy who operates it is the author of a well-known Advanced Accounting textbook (which some of us had in school, it's a freaking difficult textbook too but the chapters on NPO and government acct. are really really good.)

@stress yes me too, I went it alone for a year with old college textbooks. It didn't pay off for me though. I don't have much of a budget for this stuff anymore, I've just recently been hit with a huge inflationary-related cost of living increase and even 6 months ago I had tons more free cash than I do now. But, I could probably work in 67 a month for Ninja. I am at the stage though where I don't need a lot of remediation/review of topics. I just need to do practice questions galore and get the repetition/drill going again before I re-take each part.
The one I am dreading retaking the most is actually AUD. I spent so much time preparing for my original taking of it and the questions for AUD seem to be much harder than for the other 3 parts because there are always 2 or 3 answer choices that are very close.

The site was sold a few years ago to the owner of another CPA Review company, and it's now run by them, fyi.

It's a good site for some free questions.

NINJA Monthly is *almost* free 🙂

Interesting, about cpareview for free. I guess Joe Ben Hoyle made himself even more money with the sale of that asset (website). Looks like it might be that Fast Forward Academy that bought it. I haven't heard of anyone who used them though.

I passed FAR and REG without practicing any MC or sims, so I'm not sure a lack of questions or using outdated materials was ever an issue for me. Or at least they wouldn't be the reason that I don't pass. But different strokes for different folks.
