I first started my CPA exam in the intention of being an auditor but recently I’m thinking of changing to tax because I’m starting to like that. My question is if Tax Accounting is easy? Hard? If you know Regulation inside out can you become a good tax accountant. What is your best advise on getting a job or getting your foot in the door of a CPA firm.

I am a Federal Tax Accountant for one of the big four and I personally like it a lot more than Audit. I feel that its a topic that is constantly changing and i am able to learn something new all the time. It definitely takes patience and time to adjust to. It can be very stressful in the busy months because you're working with clients and trying to get everything together while remaining efficient and doing a million other tasks. However, at the end of the day, it makes me work harder and i know that i am taking so much more away from my job. Knowing Regulation inside out isnt the key to the job because every return is different and nothing every matches the rules to a T. My best advice to you would be to inquire about positions and go for it. All the hiring firms know that no person walking in will know EVERYTHING… that is what training is for. Just go in and show them you're willing to work hard and you want to learn and youll be golden 🙂

@chrystie How is the work load after the busy season? Are you happy with your salary? I plan on going into tax after I finish my exam, hopefully next year. What would you suggest to a person with just little small business tax experience, like me? For some reason I'm more worried about getting a job than passing all sections of the test.

Thanks chrystie, and yes I am am willing to work hard to get the job done and I know it will be difficult. I just wanted to know if they train you.

@chakdey, I too, am more worried about finding a job than passing the CPA exam because of my horrible interview skills. I have been passed up on so many jobs where I could have done with my eyes closed but it just wasn't mean to be. Hopefully passing the entire exam will let the employers know that you are for real and you are serious about your career.
