I’m practicing researching for my REG test Tuesday and I’m hoping that someone can provide me with some input on how to best use the search function in the IRC. I’m practicing looking things up but so far, my search methods are not doing me much good. For example, I’m trying to locate where basis in property converted from personal use to business is covered. What in the world do I type in in the search box? I’m having trouble narrowing a topic down. I typed “asset basis” and 113 “finds” popped up.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

when I was practicing the research tab for REG, I always listed out the big topics like itemizing deduction, corporation distributions, etc… and I would go to the Becker practice authoritative literature and get familiar/memorize where these big topics are in.

Itemized deduction = subtitle A, chapter 1, subchapt B, part VI

Corporation = sub A, Chapter 1, Subchap C, part I

I hope this give you an idea of how to study, it works out for me 🙂 hope it works out for you as well.

Use the advanced search feature! You can tell it to find exact words and partial phrases and it is also available on the actual exam. When I took my REG test last week I found the answer using the advanced feature in 2 minutes at most!

FAR- 84 (August 2014)
