What are your goals? How are you studying? What are you studying with? How long are you studying?
FAR 92 - AUD 91 - REG 94 - BEC 86
December 12, 2010 at 4:02 am #259341AnonymousInactivebig time goal – CPA!
studying with a review book – not yaeger or becker
i did study pretty hard i guess for atleast 4-5 hours per day but its really sad when i got such low result. Feeel so dumb !
December 12, 2010 at 3:15 pm #259342AnonymousInactiveIf your goal is to be a CPA, then you must continue 🙂
In my opinion, your score tells me that it might be your study materials that are no good. It's not you 🙂 Becker is expensive but so worth it. You can buy one section at a time to “test” it out, if you want. I've heard yaeger is good and cheaper. You definitely have to invest some money in your studying materials, but still study 5-10 (yes I said 10 haha) hours a day. I've seen some people think because they use a name brand study material then they don't need to invest the studying hours. This is NOT TRUE. Gotta study alot and get a good study program. You can do it! Good luck 🙂
December 12, 2010 at 3:26 pm #259343HerbieherbParticipantHow long did you study? My first attempt at CPA was study 4-5 hrs a day 2 weeks before the exam, failed pretty miserably…got a 42 or something on AUD. Did you do any practice questions? I just read the review book 2x didn't practice. College style isn't the way to do it.
NEW YORK- DONE
December 12, 2010 at 4:55 pm #259344AnonymousInactiveCPAsomeday and Herbieherb….thanks for your kind thoughts and comments. I bought FAR from Yaeger just to see how good it is especially the teaching style. To be frank guys, after reading your comments, i guess i should disclose – I used cpaexcel to do my studies but I am going to try Yaeger and lets see the difference.
If you have any comments on this review book please give a shout.
Also, thanks Jeff for creating this wonderful site with so many good hardworking people who shares their happiness, sorrow and misery which keeps ppl like Me failing, getting motivated, failing again, motivated again……on and off. 🙂
I dont want to give up…wanna kill this BEAST one day!! 🙂 😉
December 12, 2010 at 4:56 pm #259345AnonymousInactiveI've been at this since Nov. 08. Started with BEC-Becker and pretty much didn't study and got a 56. Next time I still played at studying since both my BS and MBA gpa's were so high I didn't think I needed to study much. Got a 65. Still using Becker. Switched to using Lambers and Yaeger which actually taught me Cost and Fin Mgtm which were my weak areas. Got a 72 but would have passed except for the Crestor I was on caused some really bad side effects like migraines from hell. In fact I had to have demerol the day before my test.
Anyway, long story, if you want this keep at it but like the others have said you really must study.
December 12, 2010 at 5:07 pm #259346FARbehindParticipantI think you should continue for now. You might not have gotten into the CPA study habits yet. I've seen so many people here who fail all exams on the first time but then “get” it and pass all of them. Give it more time and attempts.
Also, evaluate your study habits and knowledge. Are you “getting” things or just going on the surface of the material and trying to memorize? The case with BEC and FAR is that you have to understand the concepts and WHY the problems are solved in a certain way. Memorizing is not helpful if you don't understand the underlying concepts. On the exam they will twist the problems and only deep understanding of the materials will help you solve it. Also, you should master your understanding to the point to do these problems fast since the time is essential part of this exam.
I think from the information you give us, in your case you should start with FAR since this is the most challenging exam and once you get it out of the way proceed with BEC. AUD and REG you can save for last since they more depend on memorization and it is just the time you need to put in. You don't need the “a-ha” moment for those that much like for the first two and could be more manageable for you.
aud,bec,reg-passed
far-->75 Done!!!!!
ethics-100December 12, 2010 at 5:26 pm #259347AnonymousInactiveDon't give up. Since you don't have a job right now, make studying your job. That's what I did and it worked for me. It also made me not feel so bad about being unemployed because I studied almost everyday so I there was a feeling of accomplishment everyday to keep me out of that unemployment depression.
I used Philadelphia CPA Review online (I'm in pittsburgh). The Bisk books came with it, but I honestly didn't use the books for much other than practice questions. All of the books seem so bland and the phrasing is difficult to understand with very few examples. But the lectures they had were fantastic! They had tons of examples and really explained concepts and even went through some practice questions with you and showed how the exam might try to trick you (especially in FAR). I would take notes during the lectures, then make flashcards that my husband would very patiently review with me. Of course, I did every practice question I could get my hands on too. As someone else said, the study programs are expensive but oh so effective.
Hang in there. You really can do it. And we're all here to cheer you on when you need it! 🙂

December 14, 2010 at 4:45 pm #259349vukzParticipantTrust me you have to keep going. I originally started writing my exams in Canada. Passed the first 2 sections and unfortunately failed the 3rd and final section. In Canada you have to wait an entire year to write again. Wrote the following September and unfortunately failed again. Also at the time I was not working as the Big Four firm I worked at let a number of people go at my level. I then decided to start from scratch and do the CPA. Now 3 up and 3 down with one left to go. So trust me you gotta keep going. Good luck
FAR (75)
AUD (76)
BEC (75)
REG (72), (80)December 14, 2010 at 4:58 pm #259350adman0214Participantcacpa80, don't give up just because you failed a couple tests. You are the majority, and this is not an easy test. When I set my goals to obtain my CPA, I first had to take five pre-requisite classes just to get into my MBA program (I had a communication under-graduate degree), then I took my MBA classes and had to take an additional 6 accounting classes just to sit for this test. When I applied to NASBA, they told me one of my classes didn't count and I had to take another class.
Also, I am a horrible test taker, so I have been putting in a ton of hours to learn to slow down and read the questions thoroughly and understand how they are worded on the exams.
Trust me when I say if I can pass these tests then anyone can. It requires a ton of hours, determination and sacrifice, but if you truly want a CPA…do not give up just because of some bad test scores.
I hope this helps. Good Luck!
REG: Passed,(expired 4/30/11), Passed - 87 (2/29/12)

AUD: PassedDecember 14, 2010 at 9:18 pm #259351HazeEastwoodParticipantCACPA80, honestly I think your problem probably lies more with the material you're using than anything. The good thing about Becker as well as Yaeger is that they tell you what material to focus on to optimize your chance of passing. Some stuff you maybe spending time on that is not tested heavily on the exam and may not be giving enough attention to topics that are. Use Yaeger and then see how you do. I think that will be a better barometer of how well you can do on the exam. I initially tried to self study and realized quickly that there was too much material to try to cover with out some assistance. I think you'll be fine!
