I started working as a state auditor over the summer. I wouldn't say it's any harder than typical business auditing, it just has a different focus.

The only downside I can see is that it might be hard to use your experience to get into the business world if you ever decide to transition out, but I could be wrong (perhaps the main skills you build would still be valuable).

I work as a state auditor as well. Sounds like someone's trying to scare you =) it's really not that bad. Aside from the different focus already mentioned, I would say that a downside would be that government/non-profit agencies are slow at getting things to you? Which can be frustrating at times… But really no worse than any other job.

Are you doing compliance, performance or financial audits?

I have been a state auditor for 3 years, took the job right out of school because there wasnt much on the market when I graduated, am currently trying to get my CPA to help rid of the stigma of government accountants. The focus is a little different, but it really isnt too difficult to grasp and get ahold of. You will be fine, we just had two new people get hired 3 months ago and they are doing just fine, just dont be afraid to ask questions, to many old regime people don't want to help, but it will help speed up the learning process.

Thanks guys =) One more quick question – Is this job busier than other audits?

    @ beastmode, you're welcome

and to your other question, I would say no. Every audit has its season. There is a slow season and a busy season. Just depends on what your deadline is. I'm currently doing finance audits so my deadlines are Dec. 31st. Yikes!

It's sometimes messy b/c the systems are rather antiquated and don't always talk to each other very well, and there's high staff turnover, so transactions and explanations get blurry or lost.

    Couldn't pass again!

I would agree with them that some agencies get things to you very slowly, and there are some places that are some very bureaucratic processes and have tons of paperwork and people in processes that are more complicated than they need to be. For us there are those supposed deadlines, but its never any busier than normal any time of the year.
