Well I just took FAR on Friday and wanted to share my thoughts (i.e. vent) about it. My testlets were medium > hard > medium. I know a lot of people say they couldn’t tell, but without disclosing what questions they were testing on, the testlets clearly seemed quite different to me. The first testlet questions were on average around 1-2 sentences. Then many of the second testlet questions went from 1-2 sentences to almost a paragraph. By the time I got to the third testlet they went back to what I saw in the first testlet. The first and third testlets were extremely similar in content and format to me.
In fact, I saw a lot of redundancy in the questions. I had the same answer on one topic in particular 3-4 times. It was the same question rephrased multiple different ways and always the same answer. While you can be tested on anything in the outline AICPA provides they seemed to focus a lot of their material on the same dozen topics. Luck of the draw I guess? Computations weren’t nearly as bad as the ones I did in my review course. I used Becker and based on the test I took, I would say about 50-70% of the questions were stuff Becker covered, 20-30% was material Becker mentioned in passing or in the ancillary material and another 10-20% was stuff completely out of left field. I’m assuming / hoping that was pretest material.
I’m also glad I supplemented Becker with Wiley Test Bank because I feel like they each phrase questions differently and neither was quite like the CPA exam so having a different perspective on how you’re asked something helped. Unlike a lot of other people on the forum, the sims I didn’t feel were any worse. I thought they were as equally lousy as the MCQs I had gotten. I left 1:45 min to complete them and I also got 3 J/E’s which seems to be the running theme I have been reading in various threads. Becker emphasizes knowing your J/E’s because obviously anything is fair game. IFRS as well, which I saw plenty of and as the AIPCA as already stated will be included.
So know the wait begins. I walked out of there having no idea how I did at all. I didn’t feel great about it but I didn’t think it was an unfair test. It’s just so much material to know. The softball questions I nailed. The more obscure stuff, I just made the best educated guess I could. Even if I fail this time, and I’m really hoping I didn’t, I don’t feel like it’s a test I couldn’t pass with another few tries and now I know more what to focus on. It’s my first exam so I’m not really going to start worrying about passing too much until I pass one and the clock starts. I studied the material as best I could so it’s really the more obscure stuff that wasn’t heavily covered in Becker that worries me and will be the deciding factor.
