Well, got my AUD score in today and it was a very sad 61! I walked out of there feeling very good.. shows I messed up somewhere.

I’m sure many of you on here have been in these same shoes.. but I can’t help but feel very discouraged. The last thing I want to do is quit, however I can’t deny it crossed my mind for a split second when I realized I’ve attempted this test 3 times and still no passing score. I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

I’m using Yaeger lecture with Wiley testbank (which by the way, the AUD lectures are horrible for Yaeger), so I primarily did a ton of MCQ study wise to prepare for AUD (appx 2000). I also have the NINJA notes which I read a million times before bed and rewrote 3 times. Before I move on to another section I’m going to stick to AUD until I pass. Can anyone provide me some tips or advice on what you did to overcome the “can’t pass one freakin’ test” syndrome?

    Thanks.

Just my opinion. You are fully capable of passing this exam. With that said, I would suggest you try to learn the material a different way. My suggestion is to rewatch the lectures on the topics you need the most help with without doing any questions. So lets say that it takes you 3 days after you watch those lectures, you can focus on question, but this time I would highly encourage you to go to a Barnes and Noble and grab the Wiley Book and just crank out questions. Don't bring a laptop, just a pen and paper so you can write down why you got something wrong. If you get bored between modules you can always grab a magazine, book, nook, etc. Commit to going right after work if you are working or just spend the morning there. You will be surprised how this may help. Quality over quantity….

Remember the good thing about this exam is that you only will need to pass it once (well within 18 months) but you get the point 🙂

    Good luck!!

My opinion is consider changing Review Course. I failed twice AUD with Yeager and then I switched to Roger. With Yaeger I got an 61 and 65 and then I went to 84 with Roger. I know it night be hard to bite the bullet about the cost, but retaking it again and again is also a waste of Money. With that being said, consider your options and check out other Review courses

    FAR-65,69,80 EXP,73, 80
    AUD-61,65,84 EXP, 73,78 DONE......
    REG-73 So close, 64, 81
    BEC-69, 70, 69, 77

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, AFTER 3.5 YEARS OF STUDYING
    I'M FINALLY DONE!!!!!!!!!!

I have yet to look at where my weak points/strong points are, but I will listen to the lectures again on the weak areas. Its going to be brutal but if it helps its all worth it.

Not sure I'm ready just yet to switch review courses since the 1st time I took AUD was in 2010 w/Becker and now I've just tried again with Yaeger. I'll give it a couple more shots before switching but thanks for the input!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record lol make the very modest investment in the ninja notes! I used the same material (Wiley) for all but FAR and the ninja notes along with Jeff's study tips made my 3rd shot at AUD a success! Might be just what you need to tie up the loose ends!

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

you might consider Gleim….I did approx. 1700 Gleim questions for AUD and I felt like the exam was easier than the 20-30 MC testlets I would do in Gleim. I was also using/attending NIU live sessions

I would echo some of the other sentiments from my fellow posters here, but I would add one thing…I doubt that the problem is your work ethic or your willingness to study; perhaps the problem is that the theory and/or the concepts that are ultimately driving the questions is what you are struggling with. I think what you may need is a little bit of in-person help…might I suggest finding a study group in your area (maybe post something at the nearest college's school of accountancy)? Alternatively, you could seek out a tutor (I know not the most cost-effective method, but probably the best results).

I hope that helps. Good luck!

    @ OP

I learned this the hard way but a lot of people fall into what I call the “memorization” trap. They memorize their notes and they memorize the mcqs. They then become lulled into a false sense of security because they think they know the material when they really just know whats on page 23 of their notes and that the answer to that really long MCQ is always C. There is a HUGE difference between memorization and understanding the material conceptually. You just can't memorize your way to a 75. You have to think of your study materials as the foundation or skeletal structure. Step 1 is to learn the material. Step 2 is being able to apply it. Understand how it's all interconnected.

So how do you know when your at the level? It's hard to say, everyone is different. I've found it best to study from various sources. I used becker but then I supplemented with Wiley testbank to see what I actually REALLY knew and not just memorized. You'll get there. Just don't fall into the trap of memorizing minute details. If nothing else take a step back and try to understand the big picture. A favorite analogy of mine is, “The CPA exam is like a river a mile wide but only a few inches deep.” Good Luck!

I struggled with AUDIT & REG, and I agree with what dtomasello is saying. Don't just focus on doing MCQs, you may start to memorize them and get a false sense of security.

I really think having read the text couple times helped a lot understanding the concept. I'm not saying MCQs aren't important, they are very important…but understanding the concepts is essential. After reading the text & watching lectures (at least once), start doing the MCQs. When you are doing the MCQs, make sure you read the explanations…and understand why the answer is either right or wrong.

Good Luck!! You are capable of passing these exams!!!

When you all say to read through the text, how much reading are you talking about? The full book , all modules, front to back? Or just what they discuss in the lectures?

I used Bisk CPA Review, watched all the videos 4 time each, then read the book and highlighted and sticky what the videos ddin't cover, read the highlighted book again. Start taking practice questions. At this point you should be able to get a lot correct. Continue to go through videos and book, over and over. Do all 1000 of your practice questions the 4 days prior to the test. This is what I did – 197 hours for Audit.

I don't think people are putting in enough time. Most people need to see something 7 – 8 times before they remember it. A couple times just to understand it.

btw, you can do this with any review material, does't have to be Bisk

-yellowboy… I'm trying to decide on that. I was hoping to do so in October, but September is going to be a very busy month for me at work. My gut feeling is November would be the smartest, but I hate the idea of dragging it out.

I'm in the northernmost metroplex of the state. 🙂

    – TXCPAGAL – yeah I understand how hard it is with work and studying. I haven't taken any sections.

I'm taking one more class this FALL for my master's and it will fulfill my requirements for the TSBPA.

what is the turn around time for TSBPA ??

If I remember correctly, it took about 40 days for them to accept my application and paperwork (this was back in 2009 when I graduated with my MA). Once you are accepted, then you go online and apply for a section you would like to take.. thats a small fee ($15). That small fee will get you a payment coupon a couple days later.. in which you then use the “payment coupon” to pay for your section you would like to take. (Thats the exam fee.) Once you pay for the exam, you wait for your NTS to come via email and then you can schedule through ProMetric. Its such a tedious process.. hope it makes sense though.

Turnaround time from applying for one section ($15 fee) to finally receiving your NTS and being able to schedule usually about 2 weeks max. Which wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
