So my journey has gone like this

    • October of 2012 failed Audit with a 74

    • May of 2013 passed Audit

    • August 2013 passed BEC

    • November of 2013 passed REG

    • February of 2014 —- 74

Recently I re-took the exam with expectations to receive the score in late May of which I am pretty certain I failed once again. My current position is Finance Manager at a very good private company with no expectations of every working in the public environment.

My question is this, I have a large family and like all of you the CPA exam has consumed my life which has negatively affected the people around me. What is the point that it’s okay to say enough is enough and call it on every being a CPA? I’ve read a lot of your stories and have taken quite a bit of inspiration from them so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The time to give up on being a CPA is not after passing three exams. Besides, you clearly get the material if you got a 74 on FAR. You've come this far. How do you think it would make the people around you that have been negatively impacted feel if you came all this way and put them through all of this and then just gave up rather than reaching your goal? Be sensible. Finish the journey.

When is it okay to quit taking the CPA exam? When you have CPA after your name!

I asked for plenty of patience from my wife and extended family and friends, and they really have been patient with me. I have spent a lot of time studying for just one exam and when I tell them I have 3 more I can just see their faces change. I feel like I have crawled into a cave but am still trying to balance family time. It's awful, but I can't give up. My entire future relies on this exam and I have to pass.

You are so close. Closer than me! You can't give up, you must pass! It's not about having the expectations to work in public it's about preparing for the future in the best way possible. I'm sure getting the CPA will not hurt you. I would have a talk with your wife/family and let them know that yes people pass but if you give up now all the time and effort you put into passing 3 sections will only go to waste.

    FAR - 78*
    AUD - 66, 79
    REG - 73, 76
    BEC - 79

FtheCPAExam: I'm in finance too. I was honestly toying with the idea of the CPA for about a year and then decided to not even begin. Took and passed the CMA and then came back. Reason being is that somebody I highly respect in Finance said the CPA has been the biggest impact to his career opportunity and growth. I think the CPA is truly a game changer, for people in Accounting of course but also for those of us in Finance. Being well rounded from a Finance-Accounting perspective gives you TONS of respect out there, and additional opportunity to go along with it. I say all of this because even though you don't plan on going into public accounting, the CPA can be HUGE for you; I know it will be for me!

I think for most of us the thought of giving up so close to the end is just unthinkable, but none of us are in your shoes. You need to make the best decision for you and your family. I would just say this, like all decisions it's best to gather as much information as possible. Have a heart to heart with your family, try to determine if they really need you to quit or if it's just that you miss them. Do some research, get in touch with others in Finance who have a CPA, I think you might be surprised how big it really can be. Most of all, don't give up because you use these things as excuses to not have to face another potential failure. The CPA requires you to leave your ego at the door, do a self check to be sure it isn't just your ego talking. You have way too much invested to give up this close unless it's absolutely critical to either your family or your sanity.

    MBA,CMA,CPA, CFF?, ABV?

It looks like your AUD credit doesn't expire until November 2014. That gives you 2 more chances to pass FAR, in the July-August window and in the October-November window. You have come so far, I would at least give it one more shot, in these two quarters.

If your family has already suffered due to this exam, you owe it to them not to walk away!! They now have an investment in your success so you owe them a maximum return on their sacrifices.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.
