A month until FAR, on F-5…should I be worried

Ok, ok. I asked when I began studying in October and someone gave me the advice that I should take the exam as soon as possible because before I know it the Holidays are passed and I am freaking out.

And here I am, after telling myself I have time, looked at the calendar and WOW! This is really coming up soon. Now I have heard of folks passing after studying for a month, a week even, however, I do work full time +some so I really only have the weekends to drill out more than 4 hours.

So here I lie, stuck on F-5 bonds and long term ob’s. And I keep thinking I am almost to f-8 and f-9, but forget about f-6 and 7 I have to do too! AHHHHH! I want some solid time to review as I don’t have ANY of the topics down to an 80% without looking over notes. Also, I am planning on rewriting my Ninja and really just want to go into this exam thinking I won’t have to blow another $250.

Anyone have some uplifting encouragement or advice? I work really slow and don’t get how some of you get through two chapters in a weekend or even a day!

Don't let the stress get to you! You can do it! Many people have passed that were not able to get a chapter fully done in a week (like me), let along two in a weekend.

Stay focused and keep moving along. You know what pace you can go at and how you need to study. If you feel you should pick up the pace, figure out a reasonable schedule that will allow you enough time to cover the material how you want.

    Don't let FAR intimidate you!!

The problem is you work slow. Push yourself to get through the sections. If you get hung up on a question or a small topic just move on because there is a big change you may not even get a question on it. it isn't worth it to spend two hours looking at two multiple choice questions.

FAR is tough and is the one exam where you cant cut corners on studying like you may be able to do with AUD. Just put in the time and be comfortable with the topics and it should be fine.

I just re-read that you began studying in October…picking up the pace would be a good idea 🙂

    @Minimorty (if you see this…)

Thanks for getting rid of those threads I started (I assume it was you). Guess the computer I was using was slow…or I didn't realize my post was posted…or something…

Too bad your secret powers couldn't come into play 🙂

    Thank you for the feedback!

    @Acct
I love your positive attitude. Its so very important to go into these exams with a good attitude. Thank you for the inspiration. I know what I need to do, I just hope I can do it! I haven't been so good at making myself stick to some promises, but now the clock is running!

@James That is definitely a problem. I am certainly working on it. Nothing is worse than when I spend over 5 mins trying to figure out a problem and then my answer is wrong! Thank you for the advice, I will focus more on the analysis of the answer than spending so long trying to analyze it.

I'm sorry to say this, but unless you pick up the pace (ie. dedicate more hours), you're not going to make it. F8/F9 is like a whole other language so more time needs to be devoted to those 2 sections. And if you're like one of us average people, the stuff you studied back in October is pretty much long gone from your brain.

That last sentence of yours kind of answers your question of “how can some of you get through 2 chapters in a weekend or in a day?” cuz “you work really slow” and others don't. They go full throttle and cram it in. I'm a 1 ch./week type of person and that's actually even slow to normal standards.

This would be my best advice to you (based on the situation you're in):

Complete F5 by early Sunday. (limited on time? Focus on bonds and leases – very heavy!! If tiem permits, finish the rest of the section).

Dec. 25: I would highly recommend to do a review of F1-F4. Just go back and do supplementary or create a few quizzes of 20/30 questions each. Some people might say it’s a waste of time but if you studied those back in October, you need the refresher.

Week of Dec. 25 – Complete F6 (Focus on pensions first, then the rest if you have time. If the week is done and you haven’t completed the section, screw it – move on!)

Week of Jan.1 – Complete F7 (Focus on the St. of Cash Flow (direct and indirect) and then EPS. Then do the remaining subsections if you have time).

Jan. 8-20: F8/F9 – Do ALL of it! Initially, it’s going to seem hard, but once you understand the big picture, it’s pretty simple. And Becker has a summary table at the end of the chapter with all the funds and characteristics. Memorize that!

From Jan. 20 until test time: Intense review sessions. Knock out MCQs over and over again.

**My assumption is that people don’t really change study habits drastically, so if you’re short on time, focus on the topics that I mentioned for each section. It’s great if you can read the entire chapter and do all sections but if don’t have the time, at least do MCQs (don't do the reading). And of course, don’t go on any long weekend trips or parties or events (you’re allowed to spend time with family/friends for Xmas and New Year’s – but that’s it!)

**And when doing MCQ, if you don't know it, don't waste time trying to figure out by adding random numbers together, just choose an answer, read the explanation, and move on. And don't waste time reading the explanations for answer that you do get right.

Wasting time is not a privilege that you have, so make the most of it. Good luck!

    BEC - 67, 79 - (expires 5/24)
    REG - 74, 72, 77 - Key to Passing: RTFQ
FAR - 77 - Chance favors the prepared mind.
    AUD - 64, (5/14) - FREEDOM!! (i hope)

You are pushing it. I left about 2.5 weeks between my first pass through the FAR material and test day. I wanted more time but the calendar and my naivety left me with less than an optimal schedule. You will need to pick it up. If there is something you don't get, understand it as best as you can and move on. You need to cover all the material, at least a little bit.

@Hut-Hut wow..I wish you could provide me a plan strategy like you did for the OP

I asked for help but it seems like everyone just jumped to conclusions without reading my entire thread and only directed me to a link which didn't relate to my situation at all

I actually think F8 and 9 are the easiest in all of FAR. They are pure memorization. I spent the least amount of time on these because all I needed to do was sit there are remember all the mnemonics and stuff.

F1,8 and 9 are the easiest in my opinion. Focus most of your effort on F2-7. Make sure you know F2, thats a very important section.

Thanks for the advice guys (even if it wasn't as uplifting as I'd hoped, haha). Oh I forgot to mention I was in a live class so I have watched all the lectures but not F-9, which I will probably do. I am finishing up the troubled debt and other liabilities (20 or so MCQ) tonight and will do a chapter quiz. Hoping on successfully doing a progress test tomorrow (my last, also my first was a 51%).

Then after or maybe when I get can away from family during X-mas, taking on F6!

Thank you for the customized plan, it really put into perspective what I need to focus on. I think one of my problems is worrying too much about every little detail is slowing me down.

So 20+ hours every week after this one! I, like the rest of us, do not want to have to open this book ever again!!
