5 hours a day for 2 months..bad idea?

I’m currently on break before I start work next month. I’ve finally started studying for FAR (Chapter 2 now..), and I have been pushing my test date back more and more. I finally got approved by the Board, and so now my test date is a big question mark. I decided to sit at the last week of August.

I’ll be working for the Big 4, so I know how strenuous the hours can be. I tell myself I should study 10 hours a day now and go all crazy, but for some reason, I feel burnt out and my body doesn’t want to study anymore. I can put in a good 5 hours of straight concentration, but after that, I lose it.

Do you think 5 hours a day for 2 months is a bad idea? Or any suggestions on how to keep myself going? I have a lot of stuff riding on the exam, and I do have something to work for — but I think I’m feeling overwhelmed.

    A bad idea?!

Cmon people, let's be logical. That's 300 hours. The only way that's a bad idea is your sanity. That's too much studying imo.

People say they study 10-12 hours a day for weeks or months. I don't get it. Granted I'm no master and I've failed more than I should have, but I still enjoy having a life. 1-3 hours a day, 5 when I can fit it in for about a month is often enough for most.

I have a hard time believing people put in 5+ of SOLID study time a day without breaks or taking days off. I know in my journey I've studied 5 hours max. And I'm only 1 point shy of being a CPA. And there was never a week where I studied every single day.

It comes down to trial and error, after your first test or two you'll know if you're doing too much or too little and what your mind and body can handle. Me? I suppose I'm too ADD.

    YOLO bitches :-p

    Guess that means I'm a soon-to-be CPA!

Thanks Jsmi77y. I just feel like a slow learner, and if I cram it all up, I know I'll forget. But yeah, my friends actually have studied the whole day for a whole month (give or take a day break) — and I have seen a friend go for more than 12 hours of studying…………I just feel like I'm doing it wrong.

But I feel the same about how you feel. Your post definitely made me feel better.

Everyones different for sure. And I think this CPA test has taught me I'm a slower learner too. Used to think I was a fast one, but I still lack effort when it comes to actual concentrated studying. I think almost everyone will experience diminishing returns after X hours. But everyone is different when experiencing burn-out.

You'll be fine. Don't overthink it. Just study to what you think feels good for test 1 and adjust from there. Don't kill yourself over it though. From recollection most people pass with 100-200 solid study hours per session I believe.

Failing a test sucks, but at least you'll join club “misery” with most the rest of us lol.
