I have to write my first paper by 12/14/2013 (deadline). My current date is set for 10/02/2013. Should I go full speed and rewrite in December if I have to? Or will you simply give it time and write it early December 2013 for the first time? -this will give me 3.5 months to study). Assume $ is not an issue. I consider myself an average student. I plan to put in 35 hrs per week.

    Thanks

If you have to pass one by December, then that means that you will be able to make 1 try at 1 test and 1 try at another, if you think that you can try for one every 2 months. So, I would definitely keep the appointment for 10/2 and give it everything I had to pass on that date, but then I'd schedule another one for the end of Nov and give that one everything I had, too.

With 35 hours a week to study, you should be able to prepare in 2 months with no trouble at all! 🙂 I prepared in 2 months or less and had nowhere near 35 hours a week to study… Maybe you'll get 2 passed by 12-14-13 instead of 1!

35 hrs/week? That means about 280 hrs in total? I have to say this sounds excessive, but I'm not sure what your situation is. Are you a recent graduate, or did you graduate a few years ago? Have you been working in accounting?

Perhaps to help you gauge where you stand, from talking to some friends (who btw are all in Big 4 — not that it matters, just full disclosure) the majority have spent between 100-150 hrs for each section while studying for the exams. Some took it near the end of school, others shortly after working. Each section varies, but for a recent/relatively recent grad this seems more than adequate depending on how much you need to review topics. Perhaps you're further removed from school and haven't been in accounting? You can adjust from this baseline to get a rough idea… but 280 hrs in total seems a bit excessive.

Elisabeth: when you say schedule “another” one, did you mean FAR again or a different paper? sorry i'm confused. I will take it as scheduling the same FAR a 2nd time.

She meant you can sit two exams in the same testing window. Meaning FAR and BEC or FAR and AUD. Like that

    FAR 05/27/14; 786/110 - Done !

fuzyfro89:graduated MBA in '11, currently enrolled in Master of Acctg (putting it off till i finish CPA). I am not working in the accounting field right now though. I think i will keep the appointment and then re-register for the same paper just in case.

Keep in mind that you cannot take an exam in December. It is a blacked out month.

Also keep in mind that you cannot take the same section more than once per quarter (i.e. you cannot take FAR in both October and November).
