1 week till FAR – what approach do I take?

    O hai,

I take FAR on August 18th and have been studying since May 21st. I started out strong with studying but had a public accounting internship that, surprise surprise, made studying difficult from 6/14 till just a few days ago. Needless to say, I’m a bit struggly right now as I have a mere week to finish preparing for FAR.

I’ve been using Roger, the Wiley test bank, and occasionally CPAReviewforFree. For the past three days I’ve been rewriting all of my notes and doing problems for each of the 8 Roger modules (I just finished 3 today, so 1 module a day). However, as much as I love Jeff’s system, I’m not sure I’m staying as motivated rewriting notes as I would be doing problems all day. If I had more time, I’d be down to do everything and anything, but my time is running out and I’m worried that I need to be more aggressive.

Starting tomorrow morning, I either want to:

    a) Continue what I’m doing (rewrite notes for one module a day, and THEN practice MCQs/sims from all sources)

    b) Focus solely on MCQs/sims and only writing down really important things that are hard or easy to forget

This is where you guys come in. Which one should I do? Consider this a poll. It’d be great if I could get some peoples’ opinions on what prepares you more for the test. I’m sick of rewriting notes but I’ll do it if it will truly help me pass. Apologies in advance if questions like these are repetitive/get annoying.

    Tank u,

    FW

Hey Finnish, well I can only tell you what I've done in the week before each of my first 2 exams, FAR and REG. I basically wrote notes on all of the key topics and reviewed those notes until I could almost picture them on the page. It actually helped during my exams as I could literally remember certain topics just by remembering how I wrote them in the notes (sometimes I would put different marks or an asterisk). Also, I would rework all of the sims and take a progress test and the final exam (Becker). It worked for me with FAR and though I'm not too confident about REG I am still hopeful it worked for that one too. Good luck and hope this helps!

    FAR - 81
    REG - 75
    AUD - 85
    BEC - 79

Thank goodness it's over... Now on to the next step...

Finnish, I took Roger also and passed FAR.

On items I wasn't sure about, I used accountingcoach.com to help strengthen my studies.

On the way to the exam, just go over in your head what's in each chapter and what subject it covers. It'll make the drive easier.

You can do this! I read each chapter on the last day of study and just did Rogers's questions in his book as a final review. And did that again the morning of the test.

Another thing that helped is using a whiteboard and pretend you're Roger teaching the class. It's a lot of fun!

@CPA Hopeful I think you're right…I will not abandon the note-writing. I can't promise that I'm jazzed to do it, but I will stick with writing down at least the most important stuff (which, sadly, is like 80% of the material in Roger's book/my original notes).

@Chris, Thanks for the encouragement man! It's good to hear that you passed with Roger and also use accountingcoach. I love both those guys and so I shouldn't be as worried, putting my faith in them! 🙂

To anyone reading this thread, AccountingCoach is truly a great source for strengthening basic accounting knowledge. Helped me a TON with my tests in college and really helped explain certain things for FAR, ex. Bank Reconciliations.

    Thanks again guys.

Yeah you'll be okay. I also got a book at the library call “Intermediate Accounting: Demystified”. It helped also.

I didn't study Rogers's book and videos for Consolidations and Not for Profit until the night before. I dreaded those subjects but it helped having them fresh.

Follow Rogers's game plan for keeping track of time while taking the test. Look at all the Sims when you get there and skip the longest one. Remember that it takes a moment to load each Sim. The long Sim is there to take up your time. Knock out the small ones first. I ran out of time on my sims and got a 75. I had a minute left and filled in zero's for the amounts on part of the last Sim since I was rushed. Don't leave anything blank!
