I took my first FAR test today and felt indifferent, maybe my last testlet being harder. Sims were tough but manageable. I thought I did well enough to pass; not amazing. Flagged maybe 4 per testlet and made good guesses on them.

I’ve read that people who think they failed actually passed and those who thought they passed actually failed. So now I’m terrified.

Is this 100% true or is it just a small sample size. Meaning only the people who have that happen to them respond?

I took FAR today and encountered the exact same issue as you. I don't believe my test progressed from medium to hard at any point (though the questions that the AICPA releases for medium and hard don't have the level of differentiation that you would expect). I think it really depends on the SIMS if you feel that your test didn't progress in difficulty. I feel like I crushed the SIMS so I still expect to pass, but you should never be truly confident in passing if your MCQ questions are fairly straightforward throughout. DO remember though, shorter questions are not necessarily easier. Length of the question is not an accurate indicator of difficulty.

I felt my MCQs weren't completely straightforward, but they were manageable. Maybe I was prepared but I have no idea lol

Usually when I feel indifferent, that's when I passed. If I'm super worried or pretty confident, those were the two times I failed…

    B - 80
    A - 80
    R - 71, 59, 74, 80 FINALLY!
    F - 77

Used Kaplan for FAR, BEC, AUD, and the first 2 REG attempts. I started using NINJA about 2 weeks before my 3rd REG attempt. I believe it's why I was so close to passing and why I passed the 4th time. USE IT FROM THE BEGINNING.

    Angelwatch wrote the following=

I actually think there is some reasoning behind that feeling that if you thought you did well, you may end up not passing. And if you thought you failed you do pass.

Here's why: As we all know, there are 3 testlets which are adaptive. You start with a testlet on medium difficulty and if you do well, you go to a Hard one. If you do poorly, you stay on Medium. Because of this a lot of people are actually feel like they're doing terrible because the tests moved to Hard and they are struggling with more complicated and complex questions. Meanwhile people who stayed on Medium don't think their tests are all that bad but that's because the questions are much more straightforward and “easy” (compared to Hard).

I think he/she is absolutely right, and this is the best explanation I have come across regarding the feeling you get after you are done with the exam. The only thing I will add is the the above explanation does not hold true when the candidate is extremely prepared. In that case, it will be very hard for the individual to distinguish moderate to difficult test lets. This is for the typical student who got from 71 to 74 on the first exam, and then studies another 2 months just to increase his grade to a 75. This individual has probably done 4,000 or more questions , and has gone over his prep course at least 3 to 4 times.

I'm hoping I fall into the latter category (prepared). I did about 4K questions, studied hard for 2.5-3 months. I noticed some questions got wordier, but I had seen them before in review and at least recognized them.

Martin is right on the money. Unfortunately, there is no real way to differentiate between the two. You can look at the questions released by the AICPA for medium and hard and see which ones are more in line with what was on your tests ( I did that and the mediums seem more in line with mine which is frightening), but even then it's just a guess. I would just try to forget about it and move on to the next test.
