Hi guys! Lurker here! I’ve been reading your advice, experiences, commiseration, etc. from behind the scenes for the last few months and I’m beyond thankful for everything I’ve read. I started studying back in June and over that time, I kept searching for posts in my situation. I felt the need to post this for the other parents out there that may be searching…
I’m a 37 year old mom of two with a demanding full-time job and a husband that travels for work quite a bit. I’m here to say, you are not too old and being a parent will not hold you back. As many have already said, there are sacrifices but you can still put your kiddos first.
I’ve only taken one exam (FAR) and got my score yesterday – 81 on my first try! I’m thrilled. I am using Roger CPA Review as I felt like it would keep me engaged after a long day of work and dinner/bedtime routine with the littles.
Summary of my study/exam experience (in no particular order, lol):
1. I studied for 12 weeks. Late nights with unbelievable amounts of caffeine.
2. I did not feel “ready” on exam day but knew I couldn’t retain anything more.
3. I did not feel like my MCQ got harder from testlet 1 to 2.
4. I felt like the sims were easier than the MCQ (WTF?! – the opposite of everything I read!).
5. I “knew” I failed when I left but felt better after a couple of days. Let the dust settle.
6. Wear layers or bring a sweater on exam day! It was so effing cold!!
7. I took one mock exam and got a 59. Crushed my confidence so unsure if I’ll do any more.
8. I was only asked for one form of ID at the testing center (driver’s license).
9. Ask for a calculator at Prometric! They gave me one without batting an eye.
10. Do not give up during the exam. At one point, I felt so defeated and almost wanted to leave. Don’t do it! Shortly after, some of my questions started taking a turn for the better and I just had to calm myself and keep pushing through.I’m obviously only 1 exam down so have a long road ahead of me but I wanted to write the post that I was looking for over the last couple of months. Congrats to all that got a pass yesterday and good luck to those taking exams or now waiting for scores. Thanks again, you guys! Next up, REG. See you around. 🙂
