Wiley Test Bank and Java Threat

Hey all, this is a question for any computer savvy people out there…. Thanks for you help!

So there is apparently a security vulnerability in Java that even the department of homeland security has issued a warning about. The statement is that users disable Java “unless absolutely necessary.”

Even Mozilla Firefox has automatically disabled the Java plugin for all users until this threat is cleared..

So my question is….The simulations in Wiley test bank need Java to work properly and they typically prompt a “request permission to run a Java application” each time a new simulation question loads.

Are these applications safe? Or could they potentially be vulnerable?

I know enough about it all, to know that I should ask…. Thanks guys….

Ugh that was such a pain in the ass trying to do practice SIMS yesterday. I couldn't even select enable in Firefox because Wiley would spin like it was loading and I would even be able to get to where I needed to click.

I ended up having to go into Internet Explorer and I did click enable yesterday. My computer appears to disable it again after every session so I'm only using IE for Wiley SIMS right now.

Unfortunately I don't know if it's a problem to do what I did, I just know I couldn't not do SIMS.

k917, no kidding… that's the exact thing I got as well. Wiley would spin and spin until I eventually just closed out of firefox… Its such a pain…

Especially since Wiley test bank is my primary study tool!

I did not try IE yet, but that is a good idea. I am sure Wiley itself is safe. I was just worried if some of the simulation content was provided or sent through third parties… From what I've heard, when third party content or linked providers are involved, this can make things a little riskier for us running these applications….

My guess is we're ok, but I would love to hear a more definitive answer if anyone out there is tech savvy…

I see you have some rematches coming up… I also have my first battle with AUD coming in about a month… Good luck on your exams!!

also, I ended up buying the Wiley Audit 2013 book off amazon for about $35… Its not a bad source for some extra simulations… I think they have some different ones from the book and software…

Thanks cscpa12! My rematch was FAR – I took it 1/4 and am waiting for my score right now, while studying for AUD which is scheduled for 1/26. Should get my FAR score 2 weeks from yesterday so fingers crossed the rematch went my way!!!

Hi All, I actually have been having a similar Java issue. When I try to do a Wiley simulation “Please Wait..” will continue to go around and around. However, I use Google Chrome and it prompts a message at the top of the window saying “Java was blocked” and gives you the option to click “Run this time” … once I click that, the simulation then loads.

I have no idea if it is risky to run or not, but I'd say we are okay! No problem yet..

I run this from my work computer sometimes and I was nervous about the risk, so I asked our IT department.

This is the response I received:

“You are right to be concerned. The key is in knowing which version of Java you have on your machine. Although your machine is currently turned off, I show that you have version 7.0.9 the last time we took inventory of your machine. You need 7.0.11 to be most safe. Please call into the Helpdesk and they can upgrade your machine quickly.”

MCLKT, I read that is mattered what was being used online. Is that the same as what is actually on the machine?(sorry silly IT question). But I also want to used Wiley at work using a Java of 6.0.300….sounds ancient compared to yours!

Hey Little#robot – From what I understand (I'm no IT person) – there are two things to consider.

    1. The web browser you use- some browsers have disabled Java or set it up so you have to accept the risk.

    2. Then there is the javascript encoded in the website (which is there regardless of using EI, Chrome, Firefox, etc.)

You must have Java installed on your computer to be able to view any javascript using website (like wiley test bank sims).

My IT guy is saying if we have a recent version of Java 7.0.11, we should be protected against any javascript threats.

Any IT guru feel free to correct me, lol.

I just got off from Wiley's Customer support. If you have a Mac OSX 10.6.8 then Apple has remotely disabled Java and it is impossible to run the SIMS.

Solution: use a PC or just do the SIMS & practice exams OFFLINE, then upload your scores. The offline version seems to work just fine…
