Wiley BEC Cost Accounting Problems – over the top vs actual exam?

So I’m sitting here studying Planning, Control and Analysis and I’m ready to shove a pencil through my temple! I’m batting about 40% correct as I go through the the problems. Is it me or are a majority of the questions not even covered in the reading materials?

Another complaint is that especially compared to FAR, REG, and AUD, the BEC book does a horrible job explaining solutions. One of the reasons I’ve enjoyed working with the during this role, Wiley books is that they have been good about explaing why a particular answer is correct, and why the others are wrong. With BEC it seems, they’re just giving you answers but not explaining why the others are bad choices. Sometimes they’re not even explaining why one answer is correct.

How concerned should I be if I’m totally bombing this section? Is it just me or is this much tougher than the small size of the book indicates? My guess and hope is that the Wiley questions are much, much tougher than the actual exam.

    AUD - 97 DONE
    BEC - 67, 74, 81
    FAR - 74, 81 DONE
    Reg - 74, 84 DONE

I used Becker and also supplemented with Wiley Test Bank for BEC. I don't remember what planning, control, and analysis actually is (how quickly we forget!), but I know there were a lot of things in BEC that I did not at ALL understand the first time around, and I ended up doing some of the MCQs 7+ times. I also googled what I was having trouble with, like variances, and found some random, but helpful, material. That may be what you have to do. Or buy a supplementary test bank, do some CPA Review for Free questions, etc. CPA Review For Free has some detailed explanations which may be helpful to you. Some people don't like them, though, because they are not necessarily representative of what will be on the exam. I used them for BEC, though, and will say, they won't hurt you. Good luck!

    BEC: (4/2012) 88
    AUD: (5/2012) 91
    REG: (8/2012) 82
    FAR: (1/2013) 78 🙂

In my experience, Becker and Wiley would prepare you for the calculations more than enough for the real thing.

    B 2/12 87
    A 11/11 90
    R 8/11 86
    F 5/12 88

@keelydare1 – You're absolutely right about seeking out other resources. I've looked at CPA Review for Free and AccountingCoach.com for additional insight. It helped. I'm going over the reading and problems AGAIN and it is clearer. I think I was just having a mini meltdown. :p

I often think that the biggest challenge of these exams is not so much the formulas or the math or the concepts – but being able to be persistent enough to carry on after (sometimes) continuous failure.

    I'll get there eventually …. 😉
