Most efficient use for Wiley Books - Page 2

Hi All! I’ve decided to change up my strategy after struggling with FAR and REG by getting the Wiley Books.

The first thing I notice is they are HUGE and look more like an encyclopedia than a text.

Can anyone provide any insight on how best to use this book?

    B 71 - 79 EXPIRED
    A 69 - 75 EXPIRED
    R 65 - 48 - 45
    F 56 - 61 - 65 - 64

Becker, Wiley Test Bank, Wiley Text and Ninja Notes

Experience - Done, like WAAAY done.
Still need 30 more credits, in basket weaving (gotta love new CA requirements)

    @weastside,

Doing the yeaager homework makes sense, I switched yeager because I couldn't get into cpaexcel and I struggled because I was trying to cover so much. I am narrowing down somethings so I won't be all over the place, but you have a good point. I didn't get to the assigned homework because I was waiting until I finished the videos and tried to do ninja notes too and mcq's from the test bank. Yes, I was all over the place and mentally stressed by test date.

No I am not going back to cpaexcel, but do want to study far and reg as cheap and simple as possible.

I have used Wiley for 3 exams so far, 4th in 2 weeks, and have to date passed each on the first attempt.

But my method is simple: I read them. All of them. Every page of every chapter. I'm not a notetaker, so I don't take notes, but if that works for you, go for it. Yeah, it's a lot of information, but it's all the information. I have yet to run into something on my test that is not at least vaguely familiar from Wiley.

Personally, I prefer to do MCQs and SIMs online, so I haven't used the ones in the book, opting instead to read the book and then drill in WTB till test-date.

The books are thick and scary, but they're still faster than watching a review course. I counted up at one point, and I think all of my exams have been under 50 hours prep time. For all 4 exams, that'd be under 200 hours, MCQs, SIMs, reading, everything – it seems most review courses boast over 300 hours of lectures alone, not counting time spent taking notes, reading, doing MCQs, etc. So, keep that in mind when these books look too big. Yeah, they're big, but they're not un-manageable. If you put the same time into them as you would into watching DVDs, you'll get through them in no time!

Lilla, when you say 50 hrs of prep time, do you not include the time you spent reading the chapters?? Well, I guess you already said you included everything but reading itself takes a lot of time, especially with Wiley textbook and each part has about 1,200 MCQs which is about 20 hrs if you do them once and spend 1 min per question on average.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

My reading of the book is just literally reading it. Not taking notes, not doing MCQs, not fighting with the concepts – just reading it. So, my goal for REG is about 80 pages per 4-5 hour study session. REG has 332 pages of “real” material, so that's about 4 days, so 16-20 hours of reading time. That leaves 20-30 hours for playing around in WTB.

Now truth be told, for REG, life has gotten in the way. I have almost 150 pages left to read, 2 weeks till my exam, and just finished my first week at a new job. Had not anticipated how much a new job (and ending an old one) would interrupt my study schedule…! So I'm guessing about 8 hours of reading left, and then need to do as many MCQs as I can, and hope to still be ready in 2 weeks.

Oh, and personally, I only ever do the MCQs through once for all of them and a second time for ones I got wrong. If I do them more than that, I simply recognize the answer, not the concept. 😐 Just a personal preference thing. So, averaging .5-.8 minutes per question depending on the exams, even with 1500 questions, that's just 20 hours of MCQs, if I was going at full efficiency all the time.

Well, all I can say is you must be really smart & have an excellent memory 🙂 I probably could have studied a little less but I wanted to make sure I really know & understand the material so I did all MCQs at least 2-3 times.

Good luck on REG! I just changed jobs too and still studying for AUD so I know it's hard…but knowing it's the last exam makes it more encouraging to study hard and get it over with!

Lol I'm not that smart and have a hard time remembering where I put my keys. >.< It's just that somehow I can remember the trick and/or answers to the MCQs, rather than learning the topic, if I do them more than once! Kinda unfortunate since it limits my study resources.

Good luck with AUD. 🙂 It's nice to be 1 test away!!
