Also jonathan – the questions may just seem basic because you are getting to do them after learning only a small portion of information. Have you tried doing a simulated exam yet?
I really loved CPAexcel. The only reason I ever failed any exams while using CPAexcel is because I slacked and fell behind in my assignments. I got an 86% on my CPAexcel REG simulated exam the night before I took REG.. got an 85 on REG. I think that's pretty awesome. :0) I believe my BEC scores were pretty comparable too.
You may already have an awesome study method for yourself, but this is how I did it: I finished a section of CPAexcel, took their exam questions.. if I did badly on the exam questions, I would go back and do the other questions that they provide for each section. If I still was struggling, I'd go back and read the text again. I'd retake the exam questions, and if I got any wrong or if I got any right but wasn't sure about them, I would write out the answer. I also made a ton of note cards and carried them around with me. I used Jeff's Ninja notes to make my own notes on, but most of my notes were on the note cards. With the simulated exams, I'd take an exam and then read over every answer. If I wasn't sure about an answer/got an answer incorrect, I'd write out the answer. This helped me SO much. It's time consuming but it works.
Also I recommend trying to get ahead of schedule with CPAexcel. Some of their lessons will take longer than others. I always told the software that I had my exam a week earlier than I actually did, so that I would have extra time at the end to take more simulated exams.
