I just started studying for FAR a couple days ago using UWorld Roger CPA Review and I’m curious how others are studying. I just finished Section 3 and have been watching the lectures first without taking any notes. Then after I complete a section I’ll go back and read the text while highlighting and taking notes as I go. After that I’ll do 10-15 IPQ just to get familiar with the questions. Trying to do somewhat of a modified NINJA method and I plan on writing out the Ninja Notes after getting through all the lectures.

I found some older threads about this, but they seem to be from a few years ago when he was still using the Wiley TB. Seems like the course has changed since then so it would be better to see how people are currently using it.

Yoooo I used roger, I worked IPQs back and forth after a couple or even after a few sections. What I did for FAR is I would watch all the videos of roger and take notes, and then read the book, and do the after section class questions, skipping the questions after that b/c they are just the questions in the IPQ testbank. Then I would rework each question in the test bank once for that section, just once and then move on, taking notes on what I got wrong. When I got HALF WAY through the course then I went back through chapters 1 through 15, take it that even some chapters are longer than others. But b/c of the wealth of material. I just kept practicing questions. Also DO NOT forget to practice the sims. Also the Mnemonics, I would try and memorize them either when I worked out or before I went to sleep. I too also bought the ninja notes, they were good for some parts and other parts they had weaker mnemonics that kinda tripped me up when studying w/ the roger material b/c he already had them made for most things. The roger FAR is like 40 hours, so the biggest thing is time management. I split mine up into 8 weeks like the planner, then I had to squish a couple days of material into one day. I was able to get through all the material within 6 to 7 weeks which left me with 1 weeks to just go back and go through questions and sims.

I will be taking FAR in 2 weeks and just started my final review. I followed a similar approach at first but modified it after a while as topics got heavier. I started doing half of the IPQs after the videos and taking notes. I did 10 to 30 question quizzes with the remaining questions in the previous sections every day to see how well I remembered the information.

Now. I see that I was able to retain more for the sections I did more IPQs for. I also started typing my notes in Google Docs instead of writing them. As you start re-studying everything, some stuff gets harder to remember (say impairment rules for intangibles, leases, equipment, etc.) and notes become incredibly handy. Digital copy also enables to revise notes, add reminders about missed questions or make mini-notes (i.e. copy/paste all impairment rules together in few minutes) later on.

I followed Roger's 12-week plan and added 2 weeks as a buffer and for a final review. I have averaged around 18 hours/week.

I am using the Roger course. I have finished all of the lectures for FAR and now I am using Roger MCQs and Ninja MCQs. This is what I did since I supplemented with Ninja Materials (attempting the Ninja method):

    1. Listen to Lectures while taking notes or Read the book and take notes (It takes forever if you listen to a lecture, then read the book, then take notes. I did that for the beginning chapters it wastes too much time and thankfully I read on this forum not to do that which saved me a ton of hours).

    2. Read Ninja Notes (you could also study your own notes that you took on the lectures if you don't have the Ninja supplements).

    3. Do the MCQs after watching all of the lectures. Don't waste time doing MCQs (except for the homework section that goes along with the lectures) until after all lectures. You will have to redo questions because you are not likely to remember the first few chapters during your last weeks of studying.

    4. Rewrite your notes (or ninja notes if you have them)

    5. Do more MCQs like your life depends on them. Try to get 85% accuracy on all chapters (or 85% trending score on Ninja MCQ). Getting close to your exam date focus on your weak areas until you are comfortable (or at least as comfortable as you are going to be) going into the exam.

Note: This is my first exam but I have been reading the forum and using all of the tips I have read up until this point. So this is an experiment method for me as well.

SGShiver- I agree with it taking forever to watch the lectures then read and take notes. That's what I've been doing and it feels like forever to get through one section. So far I have logged 12.5 hours of studying to get through Section 4 and at this pace I'm nervous I won't have enough time to review if I don't change my game plan.

I'm debating just watching the lectures and skimming through the text after each section then write out the Ninja notes when I finish everything. I can probably do some MCQ's while I'm at work when it's not as busy or read through the Ninja book or notes. I noticed there is no pdf version of the Roger books unless I have to request them. Can anyone confirm this? I sent them an email, but haven't heard back yet.

Honestly I did not read Roger's textbook. What I did is watched the lectures and then go straight to the IPQ. Once I finished the whole course, I will use Ninja for revision.

    REG - 80 (02/13/2015) Roger + Ninja Flash Card + Ninja MCQ + Becker's Note
FAR - 84 (05/29/2015) Roger + Ninja MCQ + Some Wiley book questions
BEC - 77 (08/27/2015) Roger + Ninja MCQ + Half Wiley book questions
AUD - 87 (08/28/2015) Roger + Ninja MCQ + Half Wiley book questions

I'm also using Roger/10 point combo for FAR (01/30). Here is what I have been doing so FAR:

    1. Watch the lectures (including class questions) and take brief notes.
    2. Mix in a few IPQ's here and there for change of pace. Usually for all sections completed, sometimes just 10-20 questions. Scores are pretty underwhelming for the most part, maybe around 60% or so. Not great for confidence but oh well.
    3. Ninja Audio or Ninja Audio MCQ on commute. Ninja Notes/Flashcards when I'm tired of lectures.

It has taken me about 4 weeks to get to section 23. I've been in more of attack mode on the lectures lately. Plan for next month:

    4. Copy NINJA notes (I believe Jeff said this takes about 7 days)
    5. Ninja and Roger MCQ/SIMS like crazy.
    6. Continue Audio on commute.
    7. Rewrite Notes. (If time permits)
    8. Final Review (Not sure what this will be, probably just intense focus on weak areas).

This is also my first exam so I'm sort of figuring this whole thing out on the fly. Good Luck!

I would watch the videos and do the questions when we got to the section in the chapter. After that I would “read” the chapter and then do the back of the chapter questions. After that I would do the IPQ for that chapter. IMO I think his questions are horrible and they are all repeated. After I finished a book I would use NINJA MCQ and just hammer them out (between 200-300 a day) until the day before the exam. On exam day I do light review. This method helped me pass 2 sections and has come close to passing the other two.

Herd1101- I like your strategy. Seems more in line with what I'm hoping to do. How many hours per week are you studying?

EDM1204- His IPQ are the only questions I've tried, but I did notice they repeat. Haven't tried many, but the class questions always come up first when I do them. I have the Ninja MCQ, but haven't activated them yet. Still debating if I should do it now or wait till I'm finished watching all the lectures. That way if I do end up failing I would prob have time left to use them again for a retake.

I'm probably in the 15-17 hour range if I had to guess. I was tracking but decided to quit keeping track this past week. I'm now in the mentality of study “as much as possible”.

RE2PECT/SGShiver- I totally agree. It is taking forever to finish 1 section going through the lectures, taking notes, and Interactive practive questions.

Mika – did you think the Wiley or the Ninja MCQ helped you more? I'm debating which one to purchase as a supplemental test bank.

    FAR 02/22/16- fail, 5/23/16 retake
