I have been using Becker for my review but every now and then I’ll watch a UWorld Roger CPA Review video on Youtube. Frequently I hear him say “this doesn’t get tested often. We don’t see this much” etc.. I know that Becker over prepares but for my first test, Becker sure has been making me feel miserable.

I hope our friend Roger is correct that some of the tough topics aren’t seen as much as a program like Becker would lead you to believe… Throw me a freakin’ bone here, AICPA! Haha! Fingers crossed that I won’t see every intricate detail on my exam this Monday because I cannot remember all this!!!

I am using Becker as well, and what I learned is that Becker reviews everything through the lecture, textbooks, and homework in detail that it may seem overwhelming. But the CPA exam can't test you on everything. There is simply no time for that. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing what topic will be covered on the exam, so we have no choice but to study everything.

Also, I don't know about you, but when I started studying, I had a tendency to try and memorize everything page by page, sometimes word for word. Big mistake. I was driving myself crazy that way. For the most part, as long as you understand the topic, you should be fine. But make sure you really understand so the questions on the exam won't trick you, which is what the exam is designed to do. But you still need to memorize some key concepts, such as the mnemonics, formulas, and, for AUD, some types of reports. But don't completely take my word for it as I haven't had experience taking any exams yet.

Also, which section are you taking next week? I am scheduled to take BEC on 7/28.

I was the same as you at first. I was trying to learn every little detail and I realized I wouldn't get through the material in an efficient manner. I then started to see the bigger picture. It's like my professor from audit always told us, “stand up out of the weeds…” My school had a really hard financial professor and he's well known throughout the local community. He'd drill us with every little detail and we'd lose sight of the bigger picture. Good learning for sure but I cannot say it is beneficial for the CPA… Time will tell on my behalf I guess.

After reviewing for FAR twice with becker, I realized that there is a lot of logic behind why things are the way they are… I feel this is the reason why I'm so good at answering MC, especially the conceptual questions. I haven't studied the SIMS at all and I hope it's not the cause of my demise.

I'm taking FAR this Monday. Total study hours is around 175.

If you do progress test in Becker they do a good job of getting you comfortable with material that is heavily tested. Homework tries to make you understand every little thing, but progress test try to be like the real exam.

    AUD: 02/28/15 - 89
    FAR: 05/29/15 - 80
    BEC: 08/03/15 - 81
    REG: 08/27/15 - 76
