Roger Books vs. Lectures - Page 3

How would just the UWorld Roger CPA Review books prepare one for the exam? Compared to the Wiley books for instance, would this be one way to study? Roger books and Wiley Test Bank? Or is paying $1,695 for the lectures worth it if the books can be found used?

This is for any section of the exam. For people who used Roger, did anyone skip the lectures and pass? Especially if you consider yourself someone who learns better through reading?

Personally I don’t see much point in watching someone talk. An audio lecture that follows pre-made notes on the lecture might make sense, as one reads along with the audio.

Some topics are broken down – I simply created a chart: Rogers lectures vs Wiley topics and made sure I covered all Roger's lectures for that topic before I did MCQs. It's mainly annoying for FAR and only if you are using the WTB but the rest is almost exactly the same.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

@derf: I can say that my knowledge of individual taxation was advanced because I took a class in which we prepared many returns on paper although it was back in 2009… But I had zero knowledge of corp and estate tax prior to studying for the exam.

I'd say Wiley TB was pretty good – a lot of tricky questions. I didn't do many sims. I did a few and got almost everything wrong so I gave up on them knowing that they can test you on so many different topics! So I made sure I understood all tax topics very well. The AICPA 2013 MCQs (you can google the PDF file) were very good to practice on and figure out how much you know and how tricky the hard questions can be!

I honestly thought I'd fail because of sims. I swear I felt much better about sims on FAR so I was shocked to see my score!

What l liked about REG – while there were many different topics – they were based on pure facts – so you just gotta practice the questions to memorize the theory.

Now AUD drives me nuts!!!!! It requires a lot of thinking and the answer choices may be so close to being correct…

What if one reads the Roger Books, and the Wiley Books but doesn't watch the lectures? And also does the Wiley Test Bank MCQ's?

You say “There are a lot of things that are covered in Wiley that are not covered in his lectures,”

So, do you mean one needs to do the Wiley Test Bank, or did the lectures really fill in the blanks for you ….

Also, are the Roger books just a copy/paste of Wiley?

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"
