Roger Books vs. Lectures

How would just the UWorld Roger CPA Review books prepare one for the exam? Compared to the Wiley books for instance, would this be one way to study? Roger books and Wiley Test Bank? Or is paying $1,695 for the lectures worth it if the books can be found used?

This is for any section of the exam. For people who used Roger, did anyone skip the lectures and pass? Especially if you consider yourself someone who learns better through reading?

Personally I don’t see much point in watching someone talk. An audio lecture that follows pre-made notes on the lecture might make sense, as one reads along with the audio.

I use Roger/Wiley. I took all four exams in a row and failed all 4. I watched the lectures, highlighted, did some MCQ.

Finally became serious about it, started with AUD and typed up the entire Roger book in my own words. Did all the MCQ in the Wiley book and online test bank. I incorporated all those answers into my notes, so I had EVERYTHING that could possibly be asked pretty much. Got an 84. Did the same thing for REG and got another 84. Starting BEC for the second time now and will do the same thing for that and FAR!

I didn't watch the lectures again because I felt “familiar” with everything already. I'm probably going to send my hard drive back really soon. Forgot about it! I'd recommend watching the lectures though at least once.

    AUD: 84
    REG: 84
    BEC: 79
    FAR: 83

Wow. You must have not watched Roger's lectures?? They are amazing! Especially for FAR! I felt like after watching his lectures I didn't really need to read his textbook. However, I read it anyway and took notes which was very helpful – and way better than trying to read AND understand all the material with just Wiley books. That being said, I personally don't think that Roger books alone would be a good strategy. Well, maybe for you if you know most the material already. But definitely do the Wiley MCQs. I did all of them 3-4 times. Passed all 3 parts so far on my first try. Loved FAR lectures. The rest might have been not as helpful but it was a great summary of the material.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)

Paying $1,600 for lectures and not watching them is a waste of $$$$! You are essentially paying for those lectures because you can go a cheaper route and purchase Wiley separately but Wiley books are super thick and hard to handle – for me anyway – so I liked Roger's lectures and my goal was to take and pass those exams in a shorter period of time.

I bet I could have done it with Wiley books only but it probably would have taken me more time.

Also, if it helps – I'd say Roger books are a condensed version of Wiley books. He added some of his own mnemonics but for the most part it was a copy/paste…

If you have the Roger books and the Wiley books do the Roger books tell you what MCQ's to answer in Wiley, or does he do that in the lectures?

Yes. Roger actually re-arranged the order of some topics so after each chapter he refers you to the specific sections in Wiley books for MCQs. But I never did those. I preferred to use the Wiley Test Bank…however, the book may have more questions for some topics, for example govt acct & NFP so – something to consider. I didn't discover it until the day of my FAR exam but fortunately it didn't affect me.

I am considering getting the lecture or the CRAM for FAR. How many hours is the FAR lecture? I went through Yeager lecture and I really have a hard time staying interested. I have taken FAR twice and failed with a 71 both times and want to get this done as I am scheduled to take FAR in November. So I was considering the Roger's CRAM. Does the CRAM also go over MCQ's and SIMs in the Wiley book?

    AUD-PASS
    BEC-PASS
    FAR-PASS
    REG-PASS
    I'm done!

Yeager-AUD; Rogers-FAR, BEC, REG; Wiley Test Bank, Ninja Notes, Audio and Flashcards
