I purchased UWorld Roger CPA Review earlier this year. I did the free trial for several study programs but what I should have done was go a little deeper than the conceptual framework, which is pretty straightforward. I started studying earlier this year before applying for my NTS and kept getting stuck in the early sections. I’d work the MCQs after each section and felt like the videos nor the book helped me successfully complete them. I just graduated with my MAC in December, so this stuff is fairly fresh. I don’t think Roger is a fit for me at all, which is so frustrating given the amount of money I just dumped into his program. I have friends who are using Wiley and Becker. Both let me take a look and while their videos are boring who gives a shit about entertaining videos when they aren’t helpful to me. Also if I hear him smack his lips or suck snot up his nose one more time I may lose it.

OK, I am done complaining….now to my question. I’ve considered paying $800 for just FAR for Becker, but again that’s a lot of money. MY FAR and AUD NTS expire Jan 12, 2020. Currently scheduled for FAR 11/27/19 and AUD 1/11/20. I’m willing to let AUD go and just get FAR knocked out by then. I purchased Farhat’s membership after finding him on YouTube for further clarification of Roger. Do you think it’s possible to just watch all of Farhat’s videos and practice MCQs and TBS in Roger? I’ve searched Farhat in the forum, but I haven’t found anyone who used his videos exclusively and supplemented questions elsewhere. What say you great CPA hopefuls and conquerors?

Side note: I have smallish kids ages 5 and 6 and I start a new part-time job on Monday. I need to be super strategic in how I use my time to study.

Also, it drives me nuts how much Roger actually reads from the book in his videos. I can read the book myself!

I don't have much advice, but I will say that I've heard from many people that the Becker videos are basically just them telling you what to underline/highlight in the book. So if that bothers you about Roger, idk that Becker is worth the money for you. If the info is still fresh, why not just use the books/MCQ to study?

Ouch, that's pretty bad that you aren't enjoying the Roger videos.
I also tried all the other test trials on Wiley, Gleim, etc and found Roger to be the best fit for me.
You might want to test out another course a bit more than just watching lectures, if one of your friends will help.
Just to make sure it's not the concepts, rather than the videos/instructor that is really causing you a problem.

I am a very visual learner, and I like that Becker is neat, organized, and step-by-step. It is mostly videos of them underlining the book, but it kinda kills two birds with one stone. I don't need to read separately and watch videos. I also like that they have video explanations after each practice TBS. The guidance on TBS is lackluster in Roger. I have wasted so much time watching Roger, reading, and still getting MCQs wrong. And then seeking outside sources for clarification. He reads so quick through the book the closed caption will say “mumbling.”

I've used both Roger and Becker. Becker gives you more meat overall but the videos can be very weak. Highlight this, highlight that, read with me, etc… Roger has more energy which can help keep you engaged but he doesn't offer the meat like Becker. For me I realized one thing, when I started to read the textbooks from beginning to end, my scores jumped. I wouldn't place too much weight into lectures. I just lost Roger due to expiration so now I'm lectureless for REG. 🙁 I actually skipped many of the lectures with Roger on FAR and I was able to pass. I'm hoping REG is the same story. Think that if you don't waste 50 hrs of hearing someone talk, that's 50 more hours to concentrate on reading and really understanding the material.

I’ve used both Roger and Becker.

In my opinion, Roger’s lectures are invaluable. He may not be covering EVERYTHING, but he definitely teaches and presents the information in a way that anyone can learn.

Becker’s value is in their software. Their test banks/practice exams/progress tests are very useful. However, I found their lectures to be very tedious and difficult to go through which is why I initially switched from Becker to Roger.

In the end, it doesn’t matter what software you use as long as you study hard and put in the work

Just my two cents- don't get bogged down too much on the lectures.. the key for me in finally passing AUD and FAR was to hammer MCs and sims like crazy. I think for $67 or so a month the ninja framework is an excellent value and helped me move from the 60's to a 80 on FAR and get my life back. Another route would be to buy a test bank as I thought roger's test bank was weak. Wiley/Gleim should fit the bill for that also

I should add that I lost my Mom suddenly the weekend I was studying for my final financial reporting class in grad school. In some regards, I feel like I've lived a lifetime since then and need a deeper fresher on certain topics. Some SIMs I don't even know where to start. Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm going to look into these suggestions.

When I first started studying for the CPA exams I went with Yaeger. I felt the same way about their lectures as you do with the Roger lectures. The instructors annoyed me and I felt like my time was being wasted by having someone basically tell me what to underline and read in a book. I didn't have any luck with any of the sections in my first go around.I took a break from studying for a couple of years then when I decided to get back after it again I read about the Ninja framework and with the low entry cost I figured I'd give it a try and if it didn't work out I at least hadn't spent a ton of money on study materials. I passed FAR, AUD, and REG the first time using Ninja only and I'm waiting for my BEC score now. There is zero fluff with Ninja. If it's in the book or in the notes you need to know it. For the few topics where I've needed to actually see problems worked the old plus videos that they include get the job done. Everyone learns differently so Ninja may not work for everyone but with the low monthly cost it might be worth a shot.

Getting questions wrong is all part of the process. I remember I would finish a video in FAR and do a 10 question MCQ and get hammered with 8 or 9 wrong sometimes.
It was completely demoralizing. But if you keep practicing then eventually you start getting more and more right.
