    NINJA Question –

    Guys,

I just did a NINJA JE sim and was confident I got it all right, which I also did – amounts were right, accounts were right. BUT, NINJA did not give me a 100% score on this, as the accounts in my JE were not in the exact same order as in the answer.

    Ex:

I put Cash Cr 12,000, then Treasury stock Dr 12,000

Solution was Treasury stock Dr 12,000, Cash Cr 12,000

Is this really how the exams are scored? If that’s the case, it is truly ridicilous – in reality it does no difference what so ever in what order you place the accounts in your JE’s.

I don't know if the exam is scored that way or not, but it is standard accounting convention to do debit first and credit second, so I'd probably try to stick to that just to be on the safe side. If you have 3 debits and 2 credits I don't think the order would matter within the debits and credits, but I would anticipate that having the debits first and credits second would keep you safer.

Really? Wow, I didn't know that (in Europe it is for sure NOT).

I will remember that, thank you.

I was informed by a Becker instructor that the exam does not penalize for placing credit entries prior to debits. However, this is the same instructor that stated each MC question is worth equal point value, so I'm unsure how much I'd actually rely upon that advice. Personally, I'd err on the side of caution and go with debits before credits on the exam if you can remember to do so.

I didn't realize that was an American thing, sorry! All my textbooks had the debits first and I can't think of anytime seeing the credits first, but it makes sense that it would vary from country to country, just hadn't occurred to me.
