If you’re a fresh graduate and planning to work full-time and study for CPA tests at the same time, getting a tax preparation related job would give you a huge edge for the REG test. It’s more like hitting two birds with one stone. You get paid by preparing taxes and mastering REG of CPA tests at the same time.

Interview tip: My career planning director in college gave me one of the best tips I've heard so far regarding phone interviews. When you have a phone interview, try to dress as if you were going to a face-to-face interview. Most people think that it's okay to wear slippers and sweatpants for a phone interview. But when dressed like this, most people tend to become complacent and lose focus quickly. Dressing in a suit or business attire puts you in the right state of mind, and will help you stay as sharp as possible throughout your interview.

CPA Exam Tip: although putting in the time to study for the test is essential for success, it is just as important to remember to continue doing the things you love (gym, spend time with family, hobbies, etc.) otherwise you will get too wrapped up in the exams. I find that the most I stress myself out about these exams the worst my performance on the exams tends to be.

I'll donate mine if I win:)

Study all topics and know everything to the best of your ability but realize you don't have to master all topics. Memorization is better than nothing (and that's where the NN came in handy for me).

Lots of great interview advice here…I'd add that it's just a conversation. No more no less. If you are early on in your career you will probably be stressing skillset above all but don't forget to let a little personality shine through. For those a little more advanced in their career, everybody has the skillset and it's personality that gets you the job above all else. Nobody wants to work for a difficult boss, bosses don't want difficult employees either. Personality fit with your boss and coworkers is huge

Be confident in what you know going into the exam. This beast is like the bully from school, it will feed off your insecurities, beat you down, and leave you sucking your thumb in the fetal position if you let it. It is much better to walk in confident, punch it in the face, and say “My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!”

Do your homework, talk to others who have taken and passed the exams for suggestions on study materials and test strategies as well as insight on the whole exam process. But don't over do it. Get started and do the work. I find it discouraging to hear too much about how hard it is, the dismal pass rates, etc. Do the work, take the test and make adjustments to the process as needed

Study Tip – I find that when I am working through MCQs, writing down the ones that I get wrong help it “stick”. Then I go back and rewrite those notes again before the exam.

Interview tip – When I had my interview for my current job now, it was an interview over lunch! It was a first for me and it made me even more nervous! So when you are interviewing over a meal, make sure not to order something you eat with your hands or can be messy to eat – keep it simple. Don't forget your manners – no talking with your mouth full, and don't forget your please and thank you's”. You'll also want to see how the employer is handling everything and follow their lead. Don't order dessert unless they do. Typically, ordering an alcoholic beverage would be advised against. Remember the interview isn't over until you are gone. Also, don't forget copies of your resume and references!

Career tip: Negotiate!! You know what you are worth. And it never hurts to ask. I ended up getting a relocation bonus (I was already moving anyway) that I had no idea was even an option. It is much easier to get the salary and benefits you want before you are hired then try to ask for it after.

    Exam Tip:

When you are studying, you can drive yourself crazy trying to study like “other people”. My tip is that you should be open to all methods of study, but a slave to none. Find what works best and do it. Don't worry about what works for everybody else.
