it ‘learns' where your weaknesses are, therefore during the review stage it beats your weak areas to death.

According to what I know there is the assessment phase which is the first 500 or so questions. Your progress on that portion will determine what questions will get fed to through the adaptive learning portion. They will give you questions on the portions that you aren't doing well in.
