    4) General career tip

Know what's important in your life and prioritize your life accordingly. If your career is the #3 most important thing to you, but you put most of your time and effort into it, then even if you have a stellar career, you won't be happy because you are losing out on something that's even more important to you.

    General Career Tip:

Don't wait until you have been out of school for years, before you start studying for the CPA Exam. If you plan to stay in the accounting field, don't procrastinate. If I could do it all over again, I would have taken the exam when I was 22 years old, and fresh out of college, before I started working full-time, got married and had children. I wish I would have got the exam out of the way as soon as possible. Also, so many opportunities become available to you when you are certified. You are in high demand when you're a CPA.

    REG - 74, Retook 6/10/16, scored a 72 (Hate this exam)
    BEC - 69, 79, 8/1/15
    AUD - 83, 4/4/15
    FAR - 77, 2/27/16

Public Accounting: expect to be humbled and learn from mistakes on a routine basis

Oh, and study before you start work (if you can), there is never enough time to get enough sleep / study

-Be careful about what you put in an email. You never know where it may end up.

-Pay attention to your gut feelings when you interview when it comes to behavior and attitude. If you notice that the manager got a little bit snippy when you didn't fully comprehend her poorly worded question, it will most definitely happen all the time when you are working there. Both parties are on their best behavior. Don't ignore those random behaviors that pop up because if they show up during an interview, you better believe it is going to happen when you get hired.

    -Money isn't everything.

On Interviewing: Make sure you're ready to answer the following “standard” questions. 1. What are your strengths and weaknesses? 2. How do you handle pressure? 3. How do you see yourself 5 years from now?

On Career: 1. Always plan your day at work. You will accomplish more if you have plans. 2. Think of how you will add value to the company, not the other way around. Make sure you're an asset to the company, not liability.

A strong handshake and good eye contact is important!

As a female, I have been complimented many times on my handshake.

    Not too strong, yet firm.

Remember, you only have one chance to make a FIRST impression!

Make sure your resume game is on point.

You may have a great GPA and you may be involved in every school activity under the sun, but how does your resume's layout look? After talking extensively to a hiring manager at a local firm I came to realize this past spring that my resume layout was turning a lot of people off and that it didn't grab people's attention when they looked at it.

A resource that was recommended to me and that has become one of my favorites for resume and cover letter layout is

    1) Interviewing

Don't forget to ask questions! Have a few of them ready.

And also remember to send out a follow-up e-mail after the interview to thank the interviewer for their time. It's simply a nice thing to do and it won't hurt your chances.

    Public accounting –

Many people are under the false assumption that public accounting only involves taxes. This isn't true. Public accounting involves a large spectrum of accounting. Keep your options open as you venture into public accounting. It is an exciting, fast-moving field of accounting. Once you are hired into a specific department, such as audit or taxes, keep your eyes and ears opened to what people are doing in other departments. It all adds to the public accounting experience and is knowledge that you will be able to use at some point in your future while in public accounting.
